Flat cap and a loophole idea

Description
I KNOW IM OVER THE CAP, READ THIS

I had an idea for a little loophole if the cap is going to stay at 81.5, inspired by the NBA. In the NBA, a team can always sign/call up a minimum salary player even if they are over the cap, but only a minimum salary player. Why doesn’t the NHL allow something like this just until they can get the cap rising again? So in this scenario, the leafs would be allowed to carry Marincin on the roster since he’s a minimum player even though he would put them over the cap. A good way of ensuring teams aren’t handcuffed too much by something no one saw coming. The league could also set a limit of 2 or 3 minimum players to avoid teams abusing this rule.

I mean, sure I guess, but you'd be under the cap if you only carried one spare D. How desperately does Toronto need to have Marincin In the press box?

Not enough return in the trade. Dermott is worth a high 2nd and same with Johnsson.

The NHL has this -almost word for word. It is called an emergency recall.

Wow, severe over valuing of players, especially with potential cap issues for the upcoming year.

Johnson’s value is lower than it would be if the cap were to go up. Dermott truthfully is worth a late 2nd and maybe a late round pick too. I think that’s a fair price for them.

I guess now that the Leafs are contenders and very close or over the cap, Yo want to bend the rules. Wings, Hawks and Pens were always close to the cap and had to trade or release players because they did not have cap space. You want a get out of jail card because you do not have cap space.

I remember several years ago when the Flames had to play with 17 players for a game because they had no cap space and several players were not able to play for that game. What do you tell them, sorry but you are not Toronto? The cap is there to nurture a competitive balance, and try to assure that teams with lower revenue and compete. This would alter the CBA and give teams with high revenue an advantage that others do not have.

Sorry but if the cap is kept constant you need to manage your house, if it goes down the I could see a possible CBO, but your idea is tilted to a team which has not managed their cap properly.

I don't understand how Dermott is worth a late second when he is the 34th overall pick and has been playing well. People are seriously undervaluing him. I'd keep him over a 2nd personally.

You can’t say that, this is a different circumstance. If the leafs would still have been in need of this when the cap went up normally, it’s different. But no one saw this coming and the Leafs aren’t the only team up there. The leafs didn’t set up their cap situation assuming the Coronavirus would affect anything and you can’t blame them for this. Besides, no team would be over the limit by more than 700k. The salary cap already exists to ensure parity but even then some teams choose not to pay to it. 700k isn’t making a big difference when some teams are 15 million under.

You used the flames example except the flames deadline moves that season put them ik that position. That was under their control. The leafs or any other team couldn’t control this situation and shouldn’t be punished for not expecting that the cap would be flat.

Edit: also emergency callups exist under the 2013 CBA so the flames situation won’t happen again (except in case of travel issues)

I like him too. But he’s a LHD on a team that already has 3 of them locked in for the next couple years and his salary could hamstring the team (especially if they have any hopes of having a decent right side. Think of it as the leafs tearing dermott for a 2nd and the space to sign Byfuglien for a year which would be a win in my opinion
