Really good work. Ennis & Smith would be really good fits with this team. I like the Soucy signing, he is excellent but I think he might want a little bit more if it’s a 2 year deal? Rutta is decent but I heard people saying he was a 7th defenseman.

This is a simple and plausible way to keep this teams depth. On the surface it has everything and then some. Smith is the RW that completes the top-6 with Zucker/guentzel (LW), Sid/Geno(C), and Smith/Rust(RW). Hate to bring this up because Rust had hopefully a breakout year and Zucker looked good in the limited sample size, but there are no guarantees that either will perform at 25-35-goal levels. I like McCann better as a winger, and he just not good at all on face-offs, so Ennis takes the #3C spot. McCann/Ennis/Hornqvist all have the capability to be 20-goal scorers so it has the potential to be a great 3rd line. Simon/Erod/Lafferty are the 13/14/15 forwards and, as we saw this year, injuries will happen and they will be used. Players on LTIR are depth pieces that would probably be the first call-ups.

Soucy and Rutta join with Ruhwedel/Riikola/Joseph (hopefully) in competing for the 5-6 D jobs. Hopefully 2 of the 5 will perform. I think all would be fine. I didn't know exactly what their value was. If Ennis doesn't work at C, McCann or Erod could do the job. If the cap doesn't go to 84-85ish, Smith will sign that IMHO. He's 30 and no one is getting a huge contract if the league doesn't find a way to recoup revenue and raise the cap.

I think Murray/Jarry will each sign 2 year deals to compete for the starters job. One might go to Seattle, but I would prefer Hornqvist. His NTC goes down from full to 8-team after next season. DeSmith is still a competent backup. If Murray won't sign this offseason, just because DeSmith and Jarry don't have long track records of success, I'd like the pens to look into Halak or Khudobin. One of them and Jarry could split the job.

I think smith goes 1 or 2 roads.
1. He signs a 1 year deal, waits for the salary cap to fix after this messed up season and then goes long term.
2. He signs probably a 5-6 year deal.
I think any reasonable person would say, no way I would sign him that long. I totally agree and there is no way I would offer that contract either. He's 30.
But he's been at a 20 goal pace for 6 of the last 7 seasons. He's not going to get a huge 6 million dollar deal or anything, but he's going to ask for term. This is their last chance to really wrap up a big pay day.
They take a 3 year deal and they could be missing out on a lot of cash.
I look at signings last year. Josi got 8 years at 28.
So it's not like teams are learning their lessons about signing guys till they are 36 anymore. Although they should.
I think the cap hit is ok, but like a lot of contracts. JJ, Tanev etc... who it comes down to is who is going to add that extra year. Someone will offer 3, someone else will then offer 4 and think it's reasonable, then some idiot will offer 5.
That's my guess on how that works. The 30+ players like him and Tanev don't really benefit by signing 1 year deals so my guess is they go long term.

A few things, 1) Soucy definitely gets more, something like $1.5M. 2) I don't understand why Ennis is playing center, the salary is understandable but McCann will most likely play 3C. 3) McCann imo doesn't get 4 years on a $3M contract, maybe 2 years @ $3M. 4) Jarry and Murray might get more.

I know McCann is most likely to be the #3C, just wanted to note there would be another option. For his contract I put it like the Rust deal just cheaper. It probably is shorter though. If Murray and Jarry both want more, one has to go. it wouldn't be affordable unless the cap goes up. Soucy's value I was unsure of.

1. Switched McCann/Ennis.
2. gave more $$ to Rutta/Soucy

Interesting. I really would like Smith, but I think hell make more, as others have said. I also think the Pens would look to resign Sheary before going after a guy like Ennis. I think POJ might push for a spot next year, making that Soucy signing unnecessary, but I think a solid 3RHD is needed, and Rutta can be that.

While I’m not opposed to Sheary I’d prefer a different bottom-6 option. I at first thought smith would get more and did that in previous posts, but someone raised a good point that with the NHLs list revenue this season and if the cap doesn’t go up, I can’t see any team having cap to give him $5M and 6 years. I would love it if Joseph was ready but he’s only 20. Dumoulin and Pettersson weren’t ready till 24 or Marino till 22. Wow. He may still have a couple years of development left.

Smith have been a consignment 20 goal scorer having a guy like him who can play up and down the line up is always good. And Smith won’t cost that much! I probably don’t play on that first line but on the third line and occasionally replacing on the first two unit could be a nice addition

Im good with that. Who is your preferred bottom 6 forward because I think 2 forwards would complete this team. Erod and Simon will play probably 50-70 games because of injury, but I don’t want them being the starters and having Lafferty and Angello be the first options when injury arises.

It’s better than the fascination with strome. Smith is a fast tenacious winger has put up 20 goals most years. He fits the penguins system. Strome does not. He is a better Tanev with more offense. A perfectly logical signing for GMJR.

Just not a fan of another small forward like Ennis, but u know how soft & injury prone this team is every year... we will need the entire AHL team as usual.
