Description
Looking at things long-term, there's probably not an external add the Islanders can make via trade. So, more of the same. However, I do see Leddy getting traded to recoup assets and to clear room for Andy Greene. Aside from potential "best lineup" decisions here with what they have, this gives Lou an indication over the course of the season who he should protect/expose in the 2021 expansion draft. The youth needs to show what they can offer.
Also, this isn't a proposal. This is what I think is most likely going to happen. That roster is also what it will look like at the mid-point of the season as Bellows and Wahlstrom gradually earn more shifts and playing time like what Trotz has gradually done with Anthony Beauvillier.

This is what the lineup should look like, hopefully trotz puts more faith in the kids instead of playing fringe NHLers like komarov/kuhnhackl/boychuk

He's going to rotate Boychuk with Dobson and Brassard with either Bellows or Wahlstrom to start. He always does this with youth. It's frustrating but worth it in the long-term.

playing boychuk over Dobson is embarrassing at this point - boychuk isn’t an NHL caliber defenseman. I get he works his ass off every shift, but he’s clearly not effective anymore. Every time he’s on the ice, I’m just hoping he survives the shift without giving up a goal.

I wouldn’t mind an external move for offense, but then again I believe wahlstrom + bellows are exactly what this team needs. Players with a shooters mentality - trotz can’t short shift them and play them 6-7 min. Let them make mistakes and develop.

Yes, short-term it's absolutely annoying. However, it gives them an opportunity to learn from past mistakes and avoid negative reinforcement. Pelech turned out just great after being scratched 3 times during the 2018-19 season.

Oh I agree with scratching players at times -but dobson has played 34 out of 68 games this season and at some point trotz has to reward accomplishment with advancement. His underlying numbers have been strong playing on his offside with boychuk, which is extremely impressive. I don’t care that he turns the puck over at times (which sometimes was strictly a result of playing on his offside with a guy like boychuk) . After his last 3 games playing on his strong side, I see no reason to ever scratch him again - against Vancouver and Carolina, isles scored 6 goals and he was a +3 with 2 assists while his positioning in the defensive zone was solid. He’s not a finished product and that’s a good thing, but he needs to be playing every game.

Regarding wahlstrom + bellows, as long as they make the team and are put in a position to succeed (and given 12-14 min a night ) I don’t care if trotz scratches them for a game or 2 at the beginning of the season. What I do have a problem with is playing them for 7 min a night and demoting them to a 4th line role after making a mistake.

Dobson just turned 20, so it's not like he's close to entering his prime. Takes time to earn trust. Beauvillier went through it too. And turnovers are a huge factor into whether or not you earn playing time, hence why Bellows rightfully got demoted.

Dobson is 20 and he’s already better than mayfield + boychuk. It’s been a full season already, he has done more than enough to earn a regular spot. I get that trotz doesn’t always play guys based on their play alone, which is what I have a problem with. He has a ridiculous standard for rookies and he’s always played grinders over young talent. Vrana, burakovsky , forsberg, ekholm , Schmidt ...

Bellows is flawed, but he did not deserve the demotion IMO. Bailey , komarov, kuhnhackl , Martin have all been terrible the last 2 months - komarov was the main reason why they lost to the habs - 3 of his turnovers led directly to goals. So what happened next? He gets promoted to the 2nd line the following game. There’s no accountability for vets - on any given night the islanders are icing 3-5 fringe NHLers who continue to make mistakes and not face any consequences. God forbid bellows has a bad game or two...

Trotz is a great coach, but his commitment to grinders over young talent is costing this team. Isles did not need to acquire a top 6 forward before the deadline, they needed to permanently scratch boychuk , komarov, kuhnhackl , and Martin.

Um, Kuhnhackl was demoted in favor of MDC this year. Komarov was scratched early on in favor of Koivula early on. Dobson WILL be better than Mayfield but he's not there yet. Bailey's been given inconsistency with linemates this year so a little unfair to blame it ALL on him.

I understand, but bailey has committed some brutal turnovers at the worst times that ended up costing them games. I like bailey, all I’m saying is that there should be consequences.

The point stands - let the kids grow and hold everyone accountable. Ice the best lineup with the personnel you have available

And he will. He's demoted Eberle to the 3rd line before. Barzal's been benched in a full period as has Nelson. Clutterbuck's been benched for shifts as well.(Dec 15 vs. Detroit comes to mind). Fans just want to see the youth movement happen instantly and that's not going to be the case.

I didn’t have a problem with wahlstrom being sent down. He has high end talent and from an offensive standpoint he is ready, but it was evident that he needed to work on his play away from the puck. He has been solid on a terrible Bridgeport team and his defensive play has improved, im confident he’s nhl ready.

So no , I don’t think there should be a full youth movement right away, but dobson > boychuk (it’s not close) which passes the eye test and analytics. Contrary to popular belief, komarov and kuhnhackl are not good defensively and don’t play “the right way” + they are offensive blackholes. Komarov did not deserve to play over bellows considering this team can’t score goals.

Trotz needs to develop a more progressive mindset. They will not make the playoffs next season if the lineup is not like the one you have on this ACGM.

They'll make the playoffs regardless. How far they go remains to be seen.
