Sweet ReLeaf for Cap Troubles

Description
The Leafs' issues are not their forwards but their lack of defense. Taking this into account, and without the option to find more LTIR contracts to exploit the cap, they take the opportunity to unload Nylander and bolster their defensive defense game. Tyson Barrie gets re-signed, and they import an 7'5" 320lb LD from North Korea. Chara finally retires in one last denial of satisfaction to Toronto.

Ya, I'm still thinking about how to tinker in order to get more room for scratches.

Re Halak, I'm sure he wants to stay in Boston, but I have a feeling they'll pass on him due to his age, their need for cap space, and their prospect goalie depth - Valar is likely ready to move up. I have it where DW, completely outside of his character, decided to give him term.

There's a lot of one-sided criticism on these threads, but not a lot of discourse. I prefer discourse. So, how do we make this work?

Toronto wouldn't take that. Nylander's gonna cost 3 unprotected 1sts as a starting point.

Also Toronto would trade Marner over Nylander (4 million extra cap space).

Except nobody's gonna take Marner's contract, so they'll take whatever win they can. Don't get me wrong, Marner's incredibly good, but he's too expensive. We already have one of those. And no, he's not worth three 1st rounds, especially during this draft.

You could sign Khudobin instead. He would probably cost more, maybe trade Sorensen for a little more space.

I love Khudobin, but I went with trading Sorensen for the Adin Hill signing rights, and then I re-signed Melker. What you think?

Could work, but Hill would have to start if we want any chance of competing next season. I also don’t think we re-sign Melker. great pker but doesn’t produce on offense at all.

also welcome to CapFriendly, and it’s great that you actually like to negotiate trades and aren’t stubborn like most on this site.

Thanks bud. Ya, this is a great quarantine boredom killer. And I totally agree, this tool should be collaborative, not an exercise in negativity. I'm a big proponent of encouraging the solution not the problem.

The plan for the goalies are a 1A/1B situation, and to let nature decide who the starter's gonna be. And I went with Melker for a few reasons: 1) he's a known value at 20pts/season (+/-), 2) he's hard to injure, 3) his PK is legendary, 4) he's inexpensive, 5) he has deep playoff experience, and 6) there's been enough loss in the locker room.

But tbh, if I could manage to fit Armia in there I would've.
JumboJoe a aimé ceci.

. Teams don't use LTIR to exploit the cap. Show some examples.
Yep, the Leafs and all cap teams might want to trade cap for futures so they can use the cap to fill other role.
Strange that you traded Nylander to San Jose. San Jose had a worse GAA than the Leafs. San Jose has 26.5m cap in three aging, Dmen...the Leaf have about 21.5 in seven Dman. Of all the teams that should be shedding cap to help their defence, it would be the Sharks.

Boston will have a hard time keeping Halak unless he takes a well below market value deal.

So what you're saying is that we're all imagining that at the beginning of the season Kyle Dubas took on Horton's and Clarkson's contracts in order to fit his incredibly top heavy forward group under the cap? That if we didn't venture over to the Leafs' CapFriendly profile we wouldn't see that they've been operating at $10M over the cap all season? You sure dude?

As for our GAA, yes, there was a huge shakeup with some Sharks veterans leaving, and there's been a period of cultural readjustment since. But, ignoring our obvious need for above par goaltending, when the D plays cohesively Burns and Karlsson are almost point per game players, and Vlasic is still considered one of the best defensive defensmen in the league. But at least we won't have to struggle year after year until the cap increases $10M to find LTIR contracts to exploit a cap. I'm not saying it wasn't a smart play on KD's part, but it is basically legal cheating.

So tell me what the benefit of having Clarkson's to the Leaf last year. I know the answer, but it did not benefit the Leafs at all last year. Other teams have players on LTIR, it doesn't help them circumvent the cap
As for the Leaf defence, yep it's the weakest part of the team. But the worse Dman last season Barrie won't be back. Ceci and his average play and his 4.5m cap hit is gone. Three of the top six were...Reilly, Muzzin, and Dermot were all on LTIR. Sorry Sharks have an aging team with some iffy contracts, just might be untradeable with those NTCs. Don't know so many think the Leaf have so many cap and personnel issues. Lots of teams have more.
