He's the most likely to leave to be fair.

It's not like TOR could afford to keep him if they want to re-sign Dermott and Mikheyev etc.

yep, kerfoot is a close second, and Dermott is third due to our Left defense depth

Not true at all,the leafs are weaker at LW than they are at RW. Makes more sense to move kapanen if youre going to move anyone

Just move Marner for a elite d-man and TOR could keep both Johnsson and Kappy

Ok, but Kapanen is the better player and brings more to the team than Johnsson. On left you’ll have Korshkov, Robertson, Hyman, Mikheyev, possibly Clifford. There is no need to have a blue line where everyone is paid 3mill+ and Johnsson is expendable, aswell as the aforementioned Kerfoot and Dermott.

So, what makes more sense to you, trade the less needed, higher valued guy for a better trade return or rely on a guy with less than 40 game in the nhl coming off a potentially worse injury to be your 2LW?

Or keep the potentially 100 point winger and move the third liners.

So you won't get a top 2 d-man because:
1-not enough cap room
2-not enough value in a trade

Look at every cup winners since like 2010, 2 of their 5 key players were d-men

2010: KEITH, Kane, Toews, Hossa, SEABROOK
2011: CHARA, Bergeron, SEIDENBERG, Thomas and another forward
2012: DOUGHTY, VOYNOV, Quick, Kopitar and Carter
2013: KEITH, SEABROOK, Kane, Crawford and Toews
2014: DOUGHTY, VOYNOV, Kopitar, Quick and Carter
2015: KEITH, SEABROOK, Toews, Kane and Crawford
2016 and 2017: exceptions, only one of the 5 was a d-man, but this is possible when you've got Crosby
2018: CARLSON, ORLOV, Holtby, OVI and Kuz
2019: PIETRANGELO, PARAYKO, ROR, Tarasenko and Binnington

Look, TOR needs to realize that they're not doing things the proper way. They have no Crosby or anyone even remotely close to him. They have to get another d-man asap and the only way to free up enough cap room to acquire that d-man and keep a nice depth and to have enough trade value is Marner

Id rather keep both of them than trade one for as hilariously little as these proposals suggest and then hope like hell mikheyev is 2nd liner with no fall back plan

hes not movable with his injury. when he gets back on the ice and produces he can be moved but his value atm would not be worth trading over the summer.

At the end of the day TOR can't afford to keep all of them. I'm almost certain one of Johnsson, Kerfoot and Kapanen is moving. Personally I'd move Johnsson.

The team is built in very weird way. They've invested so much in their TOP-4 forwards it's inevitable that they're going to be compromised behind them...

Also why should teams pay top price for a mid-6 winger(s)?

By your logic, let me ask then - what team would move their leading top level D-man for Marner?

The leafs may have to move one, we dont know yet. We literally have no idea what is going to happen league or cap wisedor even the playoffs or draft, let alone free agency or next season.
And if the leafs do have to move one they can do more things than just use the one fans like less right now as a cap dump.
Amd teams dont need to pay top price, they simply need to actually give up value comparable to the value they are getting.

In a vacuum disregarding needs and salary and assuming minimum value?
Johnsson- early 3rd (pick in the 60s) and a high ceiling B level prospect
Kapanen- a youngish number 4 defender

Cool. I'd probably give a 2nd for Johnsson. TOP4 D for Kappy seems fair.

So what, you want the other guy who missed half the season to injuries? Even before the injuries, Mikheyev had been better and will be cheaper. Cap bud. You can easily package up a few players for something more instead of moving one of your better players. Kapanen can both score, skate and has proven that he has no issues with scrapping. Not a player you wanna move

Amazing, you just described johnsson too! Except he didnt just come off a bunch of good games at the end of the season, so fans have flip flopped on him again.
Kapanen has gone from first liner to trade the bum to 'a guy you dont trade ' and back about 10x since hes been a leaf, but people seem to forget that.
As far as mikheyek goes, the dude literarily had his arm sliced to hell and hasnt played a game since and his 39 game season includes a couple big pdo benders, but sure johnson who is hurt and is a proven 20 goal guy etc and can skate and is feisty as hell and is decent defensively oh, he had a bad pdo streak where no one was scoring then got hurt, trade the bum!
You see how this works, bud?

The Leafs don't have much cap problems as some other teams. Somehow on CapFriendly, it's only the Leafs that cap problems. What will be cap in 2020/21 even if the season if played? Based on 2019/20 revenues maybe the should be 70m. Obviously the owners and NHLPA have to work a solution.
There are just so many teams near the cap, the buyers can drive a hard bargain. If the Leaf need cap and want to spend on money on Dman, "giving" a player Johnsson away might be the only option. And the Leafs won't be only team trying to give away players.
