The thinking is good, the trade is bad. When we go out and take a cap relief/dump (Call it how you want) you do it to get something valuable at the same time. I mean just take the Armia trade as a baseline, we took less salary for Armia (Who's an excellent middle 6 winger and our best puck protection forward and a former 1st rounder), a 4th and a 7th. How high do you value MacEwen? He's got good numbers in the AHL but hasn't done anything in the NHL yet (Except for 17 games) and you're also giving a way better asset in Weal than what we gave in the other trade (Bourque).
4.1M$ = Giving no asset, receiving Armia, 4th and 7th
4.375M$ = Giving bottom 6 forward, receive MacEwen
That doesn't look good enough to me. If I need to give an asset and take a dump I'd most likely ask for prospects like Gaudette, Höglander or Woo with picks or a roster player like Virtanen and picks. I mean if you really want a RW prospect I think Kole Lind is a more interesting guy than MacEwen because you can see steady progression at every level each year.
