Description
Draft day post with no lotto sim in the post below
This post will be linked to that one as the actual selections made
Using the outline that NHL.com put out with its last rankings of the top 31

MTL with its 8th OA Pick as per NHL.com Projections is Alex Holtz

MTL with its 11th OA Pick as per NHL.com Projections is Yaroslav Askarov

i Made a Trade with MIN to get the 11th OA pick from them using Domi.
MTL is willing to do the package as it gives Suzuki more time at Center
The pick and the player both stand to pay off long term which is ideal as in the short term they're unneeded

Not picking later draft picks because i'm not using opinion this post on the selection.
Just letting the NHL's rankings stand and seeing where the pieces would fall and how that would make us better.

Holtz can be the RW we need to play top 6 with Caufield Longterm
Both are highly skilled and if we develop them another 1-2 years could
easily both become 30 goal scorers at the NHL level

Askarov is the first Goalie since Price to be ranked top 10 in the draft OA
He'll spend the next 3-4 years in the Russia as a Starter Primarily while developing
While Primeau's developing over here learning to play long road games and real playoffs.
Askarov is oversea's developing . By the time they're ready Price will be 36-37 with the bulk of his contract paid off making him easier to move .Let Primeau push price out them bring Askarov over to play Tandem like 8/10 cup winners we able to rely on and what clipped MTL's ECF dreams because we didnt come prepared.

There's upsides to both i think
What i really like is our line's
Plus we got players 1-2 years out in the AHL and
Players in other leagues getting ready to turn pro and jump to the AHL
With few like Holtz and Caufield going directly to the NHL when ready

It builds us a strong team now but by 2025 when we're at a place where moving Price and Weber is not only easier but will happen because youth pushed them out and not for cap reasons. We'll keep building on youth offering a standard 5m dollar deal with full NMC to most starters while paying more to those who want it but not offering any protection . (TBL build which forces us to keep moving out the old for the new )

With Suzuki here and KK/RP developing in Laval what they need is a Danault guiding them capable of playing 1st or 3rd line while making an impact. Domi also has more value then Danault making it easier to let him go for a profit

More changes to come in the summer with MTL re-signing Kovalchuk and hopefully bringing back Halak . Offer sheet on D'angelo at 7m for 5 years offering him the chance to be UFA before he's 30 for 1 last payday after this if he ages well (NYR arent in a position to match but if the do that's fine we can always re-sign Petry later and develop a prospect )

Tatar-Danault-Gallagher
Drouin-Suzuki-Kovalchuk
Byron-Rask-Lehkonen
MacEwan-Evans-Armia(Evans and Poehling might Cycle as Reward if Poehling gets hot in Laval one week but i like Evans with ZM/JA physical play on his wing)
Weise(good mentor for AHL/NHL to have around for 1.1m on 1 year deal)

Chiarot-Weber
Mete-Petry
Romanov-Benn(possibly D'angelo for 1 year for a playoff push before replacing Petry when he goes UFA right after )
Kulak (Benn if OS works out)

Price
Halak

MTL
  1. Rask, Victor
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2020 (MIN)
Détails additionnels:
the cheapest way for MIN to get Domi is to bury Alzner and buy him out for us.We'll take Rask who will take 3rd line/4th Line depending on which AHL Center steps up KK ,JE or RP.(i think its evans so likely 3rd Center)

MIN is after all getting a Center in his first 2 years ever at that position had 41% FO year 1 and 49% year 2 with 116 points in 151 games in that time .If MTL was willing to give up Danault then we wouldnt consider Domi leaving but he was a winger we never expected to turn Center who stepped up due to our needs.
MIN
  1. Alzner, Karl (750 000 $ retained)
  2. Domi, Max
Détails additionnels:
Alzner @3.875m making his AHL cap when buried is 3m
His buyout in his final year is 2.2m and 1.1m cap over 2 years

Over 3 years buried/bought out that means the cap hit will go from 3m to 2m to 1m to gone.
2.
MTL
  1. Benn, Jordie
  2. MacEwen, Zack
Détails additionnels:
MTL gets a mentor for Romanov who can play LD and RD comfortably at a 18-20 minutes range. perfect for our needs and we know he fits the system.

MacEwen played Junior here and he's a Prust.
He's a Leader but also a bit of a clown on the bench.
He'll fight anyone who runs at his teammates but would
rather goat someone talented into a fight then a nobody.

ZM is a very serviceable replacement for Nick Cousins.
VAN
  1. Weal, Jordan
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2020 (WSH)
Détails additionnels:
As sad as it is Weals the most consistent NHL player in the bunch. MTL just doesnt need him to run our 2nd PP unit anymore which was why he was brought in as we had no Centers capable of winning faceoffs on 2nd PP unit consistently until Weal. (Suzuki and Danault now occupy those roles leaving Weal a healthy scratch more often then not as he's a special teams guy)

The 3rd is the most valuable piece in the trade as its in this years deep draft but even if it wasnt would still hold the most value involved in the deal

it is if you understand hockey at all
Alzner's contract compared to Rasks sucks just as hard

Rask is a joke and a cap dump for them as well
he barely played as well as Spezza for 4m and is signed longer then Alzner.

Rask is on a 4 year decline that has seen him go from 2nd line Center to 4th line Center

but since you're to stoned to understand this
just subtract Rask and Alzner

the idea was basically Domi and cap dump for #11 OA and a longer term cap dump
but if that's to much detail just do Domi for #11 OA and call it a day

Alzner is worse than Rask. He isn't even an nhler. Domi is a 50 point player and Araskov is a potential starting goaltender

The dumbest thing I keep seeing on CapFriendly is when I see people trading for guys that didn't sign with their former team when they were UFAs and chose to go elsewhere for the same cap or less. (For habs that would mainly include Radulov, Benn, Duchene)
(Not against you personally but just everyone's doing it)

He does hold a point there. If Askarov is still there at 11OA it'd make sense for Minnesota to slowly start their rebuild with a great long term project like Askarov. On the other side if he's gone (Likely to be Chicago but even more likely is NJ with their second 1st rounder) are you making the deal? Guys like Zary, Quinn, Mercer and Wallinder aren't seen to become franchise or even elite players (Even if I'd love any of them in my middle 6) so would it make more sense to take the sure thing and boost your top 6 right now and sign him long term?
I think it'd be worth debating inside the organisation, either they retool or they keep pushing to be a wild card team for the upcoming years. (The former making more sense but still worth debating)
