People sign Gauthier because he has on of the highest faceoff percentages for the leafs this season. He has been a little better this season and has a 4th line winger role

Tanev and Barabanov cost the same cap as Dermot and Kerfoot. Leafs are much better to keep their own guys Why do Leaf fans think Barabanov is NHL good enough to play important minutes?

It's not the evaluation of Johnsson and Kerfoot, although if Kerfoot played for another team I would guess he would be thought of differently, it's the scenario. Flat cap, no cbo. Teams with cap space are kings. It's a buyer's market...

There are still far better options than flipping them for less than stellar draft capital. What you have suggested here just is not enough IMO. Thanks for posting though.
