my thinking is it scoring depth at last for the sabers. Eichel line is going to produce regardless but to have another line or 2 that can chip in will go a long way.

ZERO chance that Okposo & Hutton get buried

I’m sure they’d trade Hutton, could be possible
Johansson didn’t show nearly enough to drop him down to the AHL though
Only way that happens is mid season, if Hutton is playing horribly & Johansson is killing it again

Okposo played well on line4
He was better than Lazar & Asplund
So again, would take a big drop off for him to get sent down at some point throughout the season

If teams get a compliance buyout though....
then we’d dump Okposo in a heartbeat I’d bet

so if you send down okpo and hutton team gets over 3m$ of cap space. if you bring in 2 rookie contracts to fill that you get a bit more then 1m$ extra cap space.
I dont think hutton can be traded but could he be strong mentor to UPL with amerks next year maybe.
I have no issue with Okpo s play this year at all, tho completely not worth the contract he has. was dropped only to save cap and bring in younger cheaper faster guys.

I hear ya, but unless they’re playing horrible then neither will be sent down
Okposo’s play is just fine, good even
Just his contract that sucks

Hutton is up & down with his play, but Johansson is far from proven

Maybe these moves could happen mid-season sometime
It would just be hard to imagine Botts sending them down to start the season
I’d be shocked

the hutton move is more likely in my mind. he is in the bottom 15 for all goalies in a few categories(GA%+-, GSAA, RBS).
the team also saves money if they send him down and bring up Johansson.
Johansson needs to grow to be able to handle NHL but being a backup at higher level is still faster way to grow IMO.

Depending on Johansson’s deal,
they may not save any $$$ at all...

You get just over $1mil in relief sending down Hutton
But then u have to subtract Johansson’s cap hit
So if they are saving, it’s maybe $.3mil at best
That’s nowhere near enough savings to factor into the decision

And again...
Johansson will not be on the opening roster with Hutton sent down
I 100% guarantee it
And would bet anything on it
Just look at who was starting games when Ullmark was hurt
Hutton had way more
Johansson only had 6... and didn’t even play well
.894 save%, 2.94gaa
Now, if those were Hitton’s numbers during that stretch & they were giving Johansson starts over him bc he was playing well.... then what you’re saying would make sense
But that’s not what happened

Again...
this could be a mid-season move if Hutton is playing poorly & Johansson is playing well in Rochester
But it won’t happen to start the season u less Hutton is hurt
ZERO CHANCE

hutton
.898 save%, 3.18gaa

seems pretty even, but i think you are forgetting that those are both bad numbers.
so if you are getting below avg play just get the cheaper option or get someone else rather then accept mediocratie.
i would like to see them offersheet Georgiev or bring in UFA goalie.
i dont think its 100% hutton makes team next year. 75% hutton, 10% Johansson and 15% someone else.

Don’t get me wrong...
we NEED someone more reliable than Hutton
And i do think that will be explored
I just don’t think they start the season with Johansson in Buffalo

Could they go after a UFA like Markstrom?
I’d be cool with that depending on price/term
Or do they do something less splashy,
like say Hutton & a pick to Detroit for Bernier?

Yeah, i definitely do think Botts will look to upgrade Hutton
But if he can’t,
it’s extremely hard to imagine the Vet wouldn’t get first shot with the Sabres
And then if he struggles, that’s when we’d see Johansson get another shot

i guess my thinking is just a different approach then yours to the same means.
i dont see why a team would keep a younger player down because of a vet who isnt keeping up.
its really just going to come down to training camp in my mind.
if Johansson looks like he took step forward and no change to hutton its pretty obv by now what i would do.

That’s fine... but it’s what would Botts do?
Not what would YOU do
I’m just telling ya what’s gonna happen in the real world

And it’s extremely rare that an unproven goalie who played poorly in the NHL is chosen to START the season over the established vet
And like i said...
when Ullmark was hurt, it was Hutton getting much more of the starts
GMs & coaches almost always give the Vet first chance

Johansson wasn’t a high pick who is seen as a potential #1 for us, so he won’t be “gifted” a spot like say Mittelstadt was

Let’s say we even have the normal 6 preseason games (which we probably won’t get)....
how many games will he even start?
Hutton will get at least 2 starts
So maybe Johansson gets 1 at most
He isn’t even gonna have an opportunity to prove he’s the better goalie in camp
Just like none of the kids really got a chance to “beat out” Larsson or Girgs or Okposo, Sobotka, etc etc etc

Lazar for example looked great in preseason last year,
and even he had to wait for injury to get called up

Look at the defense last year
Who got opportunities....
Pilut?
Or vets like Bogo, Scandella, etc?

We traded for blah vets like Frolik & Simmonds instead of letting kids play

It’s just the way it is in the NHL

I’d literally bet my house that Johansson doesn’t beat out Hutton to start the season
