If Russia selected their 2022 Olympic Team today, and ONLY SELECTED THOSE PLAYING IN NORTH AMERICA, this would be the team they select.
Offense: loads of talent. They can score with the USA and Canada. Fourth line talent might be slightly less than others, but they are closer than you think. Under consideration: Kovalchuk, Gusev, Nichushkin, and KHL players like Kaprizov who may come to the NHL before then.
Defense: with all due respect to Provorov, Sergachev, and airlock, Defense is a weakness. Even if you added KHL stars, it wouldn’t improve by much. They will be bailed out by strong goaltending and timely offense. Alexeyev makes the squad. As a scratch because of the promise he has shown in the AHL. Oh, if only they could bring Zubov or Fetisov back from their prime. Under consideration: Yelesin, Gavrikov, KHL players Voynov, and Romanov. Romanov, If he comes, is the wildcard and likely makes this team.
Goaltending: the controversy is where is Bob?!? He has been cold of late, with Samsonov having a better year and likely to take the reigns in DC. I selected him, with Shesterkin the third because of his obvious skill and youth. Under consideration: Bobrovsky, Georgiev,
It was such a tough choice. I skipped Gusev, bu he could easily make it. Heck of a talent, and getting ice time (finally) in NJ
I'm not a fan of either team but his game seems more complete than Gurianov's who seems to be only a goal scorer and the team has already enough goal scoring touch in Ovechkin, Tarasenko, etc
