Yeah on what planet can Columbus afford Marner, While trying to resign Pierre Luc-Dubois this summer. They don't have that much cap to work with.

This is assuming Marner signed the offersheet last summer and Toronto didn’t match it....

They should have let him walk. They would have had a much more balanced team and tonnes of draft assets. Although Dubas probably would have wasted them all on rentals.

Didn’t CBJ offer Marner something like 13 x 7 but for some reason he still didn’t sign it?

2 teams reportedly offered him bigger deals than toronto. Columbus 13m for 7 and Islanders 11 for 6 but he rejected both as he wanted to play in toronto. With both those deals toronto could have got 4 firsts which would have made excellent trade chips for aquiring some top 4 RD or other defense/depth forwards

They sure would of , but he didn't sign them and here we are arguing over the value of a 22 year old 100 pt winger. I'm fine with moving Marner but getting futures back is terrible, move for this unicorn RHD that solves all the Leafs problems and the fan bases problems until the 4 the game in when this unicorn turns the puck over in the neutral zone and we're back to should've kept Marner this unicorn is awful

Supposedly it was a 7 year contract and Marner only wanted 5 years. I think it’s was only 11 mil for 7 years but still CBj wouldn’t go lower then 7 years and Marner wanted 5. If I were tk guess if CBj offered 5 years Marner would have said he wanted 7. Marner was probably Unding it as leverage vs Toronto.... he wasn’t really going to sign else where.

Well, to be honest, I was surprised that there was a team willing to offer him that much money. I think NYI did as well. I think you're right, Marner just wanted to screw Toronto's cap situation, and he did real bad. I just don't understand why he felt the need to get so much money despite wanting to stay with the team.

I think it’s was one of those.. these team have offered me this and think I’m worth x. So pay me what I’m worth like you did Matthews and Tavares... Nylander tried the same thing but didn’t have anything to stand on in terms of offersheets coming his way.

That’s true, Marner definitely had some leverage cuz he received the offer sheets. But man I don’t know what he was thinking to go for a big payday right after his ELC - with no cups! Seems like he would rather be one of the highest earning plays in the league than a true cup champion.

I would have said go ahead and sign the offer sheet or sit out this season and get the same contract offer next year.

Can you not see the team is just as good without Marner's terrible contract. The 4 1sts is just the cherry on top.

It's essentially 5 1sts and Tavares for Marner.

Dubas had to trade away our 1st this year to dump Marleau's contract.

We could have had 5 1sts for Marner, that's a deal I'd make any day. Think about 5 more Robertson, Sandin, Liljegren caliber players.

That's a nice point you made there, ya Marner is a high AAV and maybe those 5 firsts all turn into reliable NHL players, but would I trade Marner for 5 guys in the calibre of Sandin (pretty average Dman, small sample but nothing to get all hard over) Liljegren ( didn't really blow minds this season, if he is Marner quality he'd be playing top pair minutes not struggling on the 3rd pair) , Robertson what a fantastic Junior season still hasn't played with men. No I would not trade Marner for 5 Liljegren's or 5 Robertson's or 5 Sandin's and TBH any level headed GM wouldn't either

You forgot about all the players we could get with 11M in cap space as well. We might be able to get some solid D.

I'm pretty sure most GMs would take that cap space plus the 5 1sts on cost controlled contracts but your opinion obviously differs.

Taking picks is letting turning down a monthly pay cheque in hopes you win the lottery. Picks are never guaranteed to be what we hope they are just that "hopefully this pick develops into a top 6 F in 2-4 years". My main point is trading Marner for futures (Marner at this point is a future) is pointless, trading Marner for equally capable player at a position of need is the right move eg: Marner to CBj for Jones. It's not like Marner signed any of these O/S and the Leafs Matched that never happened

Picks are worth a lot for the Leafs because they have one of the most scouts in the NHL. They are a good drafting team.

Whose to say they don't get a top lottery pick like Ottawa did in the Karlsson trade?

I think the trading in a paycheck for a lotto ticket analogy isn't good, It's more like using some of your pay to buy stock options in your company.

So it was the Leafs massive development team that turned Marner into what he is now? What happened to Liljegren then?

I said they were a good scouting team. I never said anything about development.

Pick number 4 in 2017 was Cale Makar and number 5 was Elias Pettersson... So in general if you draft higher you are more likely to get a better player. What's the point you're trying make?
