You can get those two way Dmen for less than 5.5m. DeMelo has been good this year at shutting down opposition, but let's pump the breaks a little bit.

With the cap going down, anything can happen. The Leafs will have a tough time finding a team that wants to take on that contract so they may have no choice but to buy him out. They need to improve the team & get good defensive players.

Look at how good Chabot & Borowiecki played with DeMelo. He’s gotta he worth a lot of money.

I'm not saying the guys a bum, but 5.5 is a little extravagant. Also, please tell me that the Borowiecki/Chabot justification was sarcasm. That's like saying since Rielly excelled with Hainsey that Hainsey must be worth a lot.

K i like the foreign signings wink . However some of the contracts and players are just not needed. First Kühnhackl, we dont need him if the rumors are true expect either Thorton or Clifford (bye 2nd pick). Second Johnsson is probably gone. For picks, prospects, or cheap Defense I dont know what they trade him for but hes probably gone. Third Demelo for that much I dont know. Would rather look elsewhere as sure hes a good defensive D, but I feel the leafs could do better. Also sure Marner is overpaid but I dont see the leafs buying him out. Maybe trading him, but not yet, maybe in a year or 2 if they either dont make or lose in round 1 of the playoffs again. Dermott can play RD but watching him on his offside is scary. Would rather try to move him for a true RD for more leverage. One last thing, Robertson may look NHL ready but I would give him a year longer with the petes than some time with the Marlies as I am not sure he is NHL ready. Other than that this team seems ok.

Obviously sarcasm but I do think DeMelo is a really good defenseman, he deserves more than the 2-3 million most people have been paying him.

Even elite players get bought out if they are overpaid & don’t fit the cap. Look at Corey Perry.

Yeah, I think he makes in the range of 3-4.5, depending on a number of things.

No truth yet to the Cap going down (it might yes as revenues are likely sharply off); but no truth.
Moreover, all agreements can be 'amended' and I'd guess the CBA likely has many clauses or provisions to allow the NHL and NHLPA to compromise on a number of issues.
Besides, why not trade Marner to any of the bottom teams with lots of cap even adjusted for the COVID meltdown....?

Why will they need a team willing to take on that contract? They can keep him. And I can guarantee that some team, even if we had to trade him, would take him. He's a top-5 RW at his best. They can get good defence in FA, draft, and by moving guys like Kapanen, Johnsson and even Liljegren if they must.

the point is that no, you are not a buyout candidate if you are a 22 year old 90 point scorer who is maybe over paid by 1.5 million but will most likely be worth that during the life of the contract

Thanks for the feedback. You’re right that they might sign Thornton, but I hope they don’t bring back Clifford. He stinks. I know the analytics say he’s excellent plus he’s a leader but he doesn’t impress me. I followed Kunhackl during his days in Pittsburgh & he was really good at his role. Just a solid defensive Forward who has good speed speed & checking abilities. Engvall-Kerfoot-Kunhackl could make an excellent checking line. As for Marner, yeah he probably doesn’t get bought out. But if the cap goes down they may be forced. You’re probably right about Robertson though he’s is killing the OHL.

According to @palhal & @hockeytor_15, the NHL lost 25% of its revenue so they can’t pay the players as much as they did this season. So the cap will have to go down. Even if the Leafs keep Marner, they’ll probably lose him at the Seatle Expansion Draft. So it’s a lose-lose for them.

Nah. Look at Nylander, last year everyone was saying the same things and he's come back better than before. Same thing's coming for Marner.
