I don't like for NY.

Lundqvist has 1 year left. Who cares. I think they could get more out of it if they were willing to use their CBO to collect a draft pick.
There are teams out there that could use moving 2 bodies. Question is what are they willing to trade to fix their cap right.

Which teams needs to move two bad contracts while being in a winning position? Cause I don’t see any team having the urgency to move two bad contracts at the same time instead of buying one out and wait for the rest to expire

There are multiple teams that could do this.
The penguins are one. JJ and Hornqvist.
The blues are another. Steen and Allen.

Both are win now. Both could benefit from the move.
Meanwhile, NYR, they aren't in win now, all their bad contracts end in 1 year.
They are also the most profitable team in the league.
If the price is right, you move on that.

The way I see it, both teams are in a decent shape to make it with only one buyout and wait the rest out
St.louis get rid of one of Allen or Steen and they can resign Pietrangelo and wait the other out

Pittsburgh have 15M cap space with 5-6 roster spot to fill out with their biggest names to resign are Murray and Jarry (20M with Hörnqvist buyout) so don’t see any need with them to drain their thin future assets on getting rid of the other

what the cap is for next season is going to be a big deal for the rangers and most of the other teams. if the cap doesn't go up the rangers are going to need to use their cbo or trade a player to re-sign all their rfa's.

even if the cap stays flat they have 14 million in cap space.
They are fine. The only guy there going to get a big jump is Deangelo. But he won't get that big of a jump that they can't sign everyone else.
If both he and they are smart, he waits till next year anyway. They clear a lot of cap space in 1 year + the new TV deal will get done and the Expansion team money.
They will open 18 million alone Hank, Staal and Kevin partially coming off the books. This team doesn't have cap issues for players it has under control.
Which is why they don't need to do that.

the rangers are going to be looking to win now next season. probably not buyers at the deadline but they are definitely looking to make the playoffs +

That's because you view the buyout of JJ as a major cost. It's not. It's total cost is $5,500,000 spread out over years. It might cost a 2nd or a lower pick and B level prospect.
Either way it helps NYR rebuild. This is a team that made like 140 million in profit last year. It can afford to make the moves with a decent return.
The blues could use the cap space this year. On both. That's my opinion.

i understand your positioning on this. and in theory your idea is most beneficial to the team. i just don't see them going down that road with the team. they want to keep storme and deangelo, who are going to get paid. storme is 1 year away from ufa and deangelo 2 years. i really like the short term deal plan. although, the longer they wait and if that player is producing they might end up being priced out on re-signing them.

they aren't in position to win now. The gap between them and teams like BOS, TOR, PIT, WSH, CAR, is simply to great. If they were in the Atlantic I would say ok, you might be on to something as for making the playoffs. But the metro is still the hardest division in all of hockey and it's not letting up for a year or two.
NYR need to keep building up. They are on a good pace to get there, but no need to rush it. They have a year or two to keep putting it together before their window opens.

i 100% agree with you. i'm basing my opinion on things jeff gorton and john davidson were saying in the past. i'm a believer in slow and steady. more so with prospects.

Georgiev league min 800k or so burried.
Deangelo 5-6
Strome 6 at most
Lemieux 1
lets say we are at 12 here.

3 bottom forwards and 1 backup defense.
2.5 million roughly
You are so close, they will make it work.
You have to remember guys like Deangelo benefit by waiting.
They can agree to take a 1 year deal to make it work. Petterson in Pittsburgh did the same thing this year. He took the 1 year deal that they could do, knowing with a handshake deal the money was coming later that year.

This team doesn't really have cap issues. The money is there.
