No he plays for Toronto and the fans expect more from him. Now part of that is understanding cause of his contract but that’s on Dubas. It all started with the Tavares signing. He’s not worth 11M should have been 9M. Also doesn’t help both Mathews and Nylander we’re having career seasons and even Tavares was on pace for 30+ goals.

Yeah I agree Marner wasn’t good enough this season for Toronto.

He wasn’t even that bad. If he would have been on pace for 30 goals over 82 games it wouldn’t be that big of a deal but he was only on pace for like 26. Also if Mathews and Nylander would have been closer to their career average it wouldn’t be as bad.

Tatar is a better fit for the Avs...I’m not by any means trying to say Tatar is as good as Marner I’m more making a point that picking him up would be a wiser move as it would allow them to keep Byram and still get them a guy who could put up some big numbers playing with the skill Colorado has. Keep Byram and give up Timmins to the habs, get Tatar to sign an extension and you’re improving the team at a reasonable price compared to taking on Marner and his insane contract. That money saved will come in handy for future extensions.

All of this is more or less true (not the Tavares being worth 9mil thing) but I think more people are trading him based on the with the impending cap situation (that there's a good chance that it remains flat or maybe that it will go down) coupled with the fact that there's no good compliance buyout candidate on the leafs, which means there's a possibility (depending on what actually happens) that you have to move on from one of the big four and regardless of his play or his polarization, Marner is simply the most likely candidate there. A Marner trade gets you a lot back, and plays a position that is more easily filled than someone like Matthews or Tavares, he has no NTC or anything, and provides less value than Nylander relative to his cap hit. A lot of ingredients are there for a perfect storm that would make moving him the least bad option.

Agree Marner was the least impressive player amongst the Leafs’ top 4 this season.

You are right Marner is the most expendable player on the Leafs. As a Pens fan, I’d love to get him. Maybe Hornqvist & a few other pieces would get the job done & the Leafs would need to retain salary.

This was exactly my first thought as well. This trade essentially solves Toronto's problems by becoming them.
