Columbus declines. We have no use for Drouin and don’t need any LHD... or a 5th string goalie... we’d rather just keep Murray and Korpisalo then add a wing who’d hate playing under torts.... and down grade massively at the other positions.

I don't think that Barzal is the right target. He's a center, and in two-three years, we won't need him, since we will have Suzuki, Danault, Kotkaniemi, Poehling and Evans. 4 1st rounder is a lot for a guy who wil force us to move one of Danault or Suzuki. Plus, Lamoriello already said that he would fin a way to match any offer sheet on Barzal.
For me, if we do an offer sheet, I would target someone like Sergachev, which will be hard for the lightning to keep, since they have also to sign Cirelli, Shattenkirk, Zach Bogosian... with around 5-10 millions only available.
Detroit might alos be stuck behind their cap, so MAtha or Fabbri may be a great choice.
I like Kevin Labanc a lot in San Jose, and they will have to be crative to retain him.

I want them to go after Sergachev, not sure how it would work. Due to taxes, MTL would be in tough to create a successful offersheet. For example, a $6.341M offersheet from MTL would only cost TB $4.68M when we factor in taxes. If I'm Sergachev's agent, I wouldn't be pushing my client to accept an offersheet from MTL.

While MTL may not be a realistic option to win an offersheet battle, other teams still are so this might make Sergachev available through a trade.

Tampa would want a lot no doubt, for me, Romanov, KK, Suzuki, Caufield and Primeau are not options. I would trade Mete, Poehling, + though

From what I know, every team has a cap in US dollars. So I don't think you have to consider the change rate.

Not the change rate, the taxes. Taxes in MTL is approx 52% vs 36% in Tampa. It is a significant difference.

But Aho did last year, so why wouldn't Sergachev do it?

That's a myth......the players pay the taxes according to the principal residence .... all the Montreal players have a secondary house in Montreal......so the taxes of Quebec have no incidence on the choice of their destination.

Carolina is 42% so a little closer to Montreal. Aho signed because he wanted that contract and he knew Carolina could match if they wanted too. Not saying he wasn't prepared to play with MTL but he was handicapping Carolina cap wise with his deal.

I'm not saying Sergachev wouldn't, but there isn't much more incentive to sign in MTL at say $6.3M vs staying in tampa at $4.5M.

Source?

This site calculates the difference in income taxes playing for different teams.

https://gavingroup.ca/nhl-tax-calculator/

If it is a myth tell me why teams like Dallas, Tampa, Nashville, Florida and Vegas are attracting big free agents? Specifically Radulov and Duchene both choosing the 36% tax rates over MTL's 52%. Or Stamkos vs. Toronto, point signing cheap compared to the other RFA's etc.

Better management? No, they have an advantage over the system.

Read this man...

Edit:
CapFriendly literally has an income tax calculator... the site we are literrally discussing this on has a tool to show you what the tax difference is. For example Carey Price would have made another $2M this season if he was playing for Tampa Bay instead of Montreal.

Here is that last quote from that article:

"And for others, like Max Pacioretty in Vegas, it’s what makes a contract more cap-friendly since Montreal would have to pay him about $1.7 million more to have the same take-home pay."

The only example of residence being a factor within that article I seen was how some washington players reside in Virginia or Maryland, but that is not the same extreme as saying Sergachev can play for MTL and reside in Tampa Bay. Virginia and Maryland are just a couple hours from Washington DC.

If anything that article supports the fact that taxes are a factor when it comes to what a player takes home.

As I understand it, the players have to pay tax where they earn the money, which is why some American players (looking at you, Auston Matthews) have their deals structured with huge signing bonuses and small salaries. Matthews makes $700,000 (league minimum) during the season (and thus pays Toronto taxes on just $700K) but has a signing bonus of $15.2M that pays out during the summer... when he lives in AZ which, you guessed it, has no state income tax just like Florida and Texas.

But I'm pretty sure paying taxes where you earn the money gets complicated due to away games - some jurisdictions demand visiting sports players pay a city income tax for the number of days they're in town. It gets very complicated very quickly.
