Description
Crawford comes in to be a tandem with Samsonov for a year. Given the way he's played in Chicago this year, I think he'd be the best option for us to tandem with Sammy for a year before Vanecek comes in as the backup. He's been really good this year on a team with a bad defense, and he'd be an excellent mentor and provide stable goaltending behind him.

I don't love the idea of signing Dillon for four years, but he's been a really good fit for us and it's probably the only way we can keep him. I'd say there's a good chance we can get Seattle to take him in expansion, and then we can roll with Orlov-Fehervary-Alexeyev on our left side.

McMichael will get a long look in camp, and for the sake of this post, we'll say he makes it. A third line role on the wing makes the most sense for him to start out, and if he needs to go back to juniors, he can go back and Hagelin slides into the top nine again.

Alexeyev and Fehervary can rotate in and out of the lineup, and then GMBM inevitably adds another defenseman at the deadline.

At the draft, the Caps take either a RHD or a winger in the first round. Ideally either Lukas Reichel, JJ Peterka, Braden Schneider or Helge Grans.

Because the market for free agents on a flat cap is going to be very small. Most of the contenders that would have significant interest in Dillon won't have the money to pay him the typical overpayment a player like him usually gets on the open market. This is a pretty fair deal for what he brings to the table

Yeah ive always had Dillon signing 2-3 year deals at 3-3.75 mill. Hes not worth more than that

yeah he's not signing that.
The first thing that disappears when FA starts is any capable defenseman.
Considering teams will be playing musical chairs with defensemen this FA period, your odds of him signing that deal are slim to none.
You are talking about a market that throws money at defense men. 39 year old Hainsey got 3.5 million on a 1 year deal. If that's what you are offering he sure as hell will be gone.
For a guy who can play a top 4 role, he'll be making at a minimum 4-5 million this offseason.

The only teams that are going to be able to give him more money are the lower end teams. There are only two other legit contenders that I can see making a run at him right now - Colorado and St. Louis. Colorado has a lot of money and he'd be a nice add, but they don't really need him given the way Graves has played and Byram coming up. St. Louis is only interested in him if Pietrangelo leaves and they can't resign Scandella, and even then it's not going to be a significantly larger contract than this one.

If he wants to sign with Detroit or LA or Ottawa to make more money and lose, that's his call. But he's not worth that money, so why not take what you're worth and have a chance to win a championship?

this is such hog wash and you know it.
Just wait till that run on defense starts and they start tossing money around like it means nothing to them. It happens every year. It's how guys like Jack Johnson get 3.25 million contracts.
Hell Radim Simek got 2.25 million simply because he could put on a sweater.
Cody Ceci got 4.5 million.
Always hurt Ryan Murray got 4.6.
You can believe what you want.
FA comes and every team looking for defense is going to be looking at him.

I think it's going to take a minimum 4x4 to sign Dillon. And I'd do it if I were the Caps. Let Gudas and Holtby walk.
