LOL, seen a lot of trash talk about Marner, so I decided to make this team, he's a great playmaker, seems like a lot of leafs fans don't really admire the great playmaker he is, if it weren't for him, Matthews or Tavares probably wouldn't have scored as much as they did in recent years, bottom line is, MARNER IS JUST AS GOOD OF A PLAYMAKER AS CROSBY OR BACKSTROM, which we all know are really good playmakers, that's his role on the team, I just don't like the fact that the leafs fans on this site don't like marner as much as they should

He’s not as good as Crosby or Backstrom but he’s definitely an elite player in his own right.

If that were to happen, you'd have the start of what we all now know as the Kovalchuk effect, numerous teams paying one player, which I believe shouldn't happen, retaining salary shouldn't be an option in any league, idk, that's just what I believe, numerous teams paying one player just makes things a little more complicated on the player's agents, why create more work for one when you could just keep things a little more simpler and if you want to acquire a player, you should acquire his whole contract, that would always force the cap to go higher and Bettman would almost have no choice but to raise the cap each year or maybe even do what other league's do and have no salary cap... idk, that's my two cents about retaining salary

Marner's really only in the beginning of his career, you'll see, Crosby and Backy's already half way through theirs, when Marner reaches that point in being half done his career, he'll have just as many points, maybe even more

Yeah I think it’s possible that he accumulated just as many points but that’s cuz there is more scoring in this era. When all is said & done, I expect Marner to have similar legendary status compared to Adam Oates.

Well, Marner scored 16 goals this year and Neal scored 19, so the Leafs should really add a few 1st round picks.

awesome face

Seems like most leafs fans like complaining no more than they like hockey.

Personally I like the leafs roster as it is right now. Would like to keep as many people layers as possible. Especially marner.

So the cap should just go up and up and up every year so these GM'S can just keep making dumb decisions and not have to deal with them??
And who pays for this never ending increase in the cap, the average fan with higher ticket prices to make billionaire owners and overpaid athletes richer that's who.

Sorry, you're entitled to your opinion but there's nothing wrong with salary retention, moderate cap increases are fine but the general public is tapped out, there just can't be any large cap increases to make up for the bad contracts out there, if a GM wants to retain 50% to move out an underperforming player and his contract who cares, it's not a problem whatsoever.

The problem I feel with salary retention is that sooner rather than later, there wouldn't be enough money for each team to pay their top performers the top dollar they should earn, looked at MacKinnon's contract and also Scheifele's too, they're work horses for either teams but they have no choice but to get lowballed by the teams they wish to play for, no one wants to be lowballed, MacKinnon should be paid what Rantanen's getting, Scheifele should be getting what Wheeler is getting, seems right... Right? Yes the teams aren't retaining anything or much so to speak, but it will happen, and when it does, teams will continue to lowball their top players

What does salary retention have to do with players getting lowball offers/contracts? You're gonna have to explain that one to me cause I'm not seeing the connection.

McKinnon and Scheifele should be making more but at the time of their signings those were fair values, if they thought they were worth more they should of signed bridge deals and proved they were worth more, neither of those guys were lowballed, the market changed after the McDavid deal, guys are wanting to get paid large coming off their ELC's.

If anything retention helps guys get paid, if retaining allows a GM to move a contract to free up cap space to pay an RFA then no one gets lowballed. There's already very few trades in the NHL, take away GM's option to retain and there'd be even less trades.
