highly doubt it would drop this signifiicantly. if it drops it's 80 at least, and more likely stay flat.

Also, you can't resign the player as part of a compliance buyout, so Kyle would have to find a home somewhere else.

The NHL was projecting an 86m cap for next year. They lost 20% revenue with cancelled regular season games, plus the lucrative post season games...assuming the total season is cancelled. That's at least a 20% reduction from 86m.. But no reason to think the season is going to start on time next season. And for sure people aren't going to have as much discretionary income to buy tickets to games, the related NHL products or the desire to travel to games. The whole cap structure is going to have to be redone with the NHLPA. Even current contracts are going to be reduced (as will voted on by the NHLPA).

I would foresee the final result being a flat cap, no buyouts, and extending the current contract by 1 year to buy time to renegotiate the next contract in light of the lost season.
This will also bring them right up to the Seattle expansion draft, which will serve as a pseudo buyout in that each time will lose a fairly good player under the same terms that Vegas got to work with.
you will hear from owners/league about how much money was lost....but this is a revenue figure. At the end of the day, the league lost revenue but still made money, and is still flush with cash.
Only time will tell based on how quickly things can return to some normalcy later this year.

Just a note that so many are confused by. The LEAGUE does not make or lose money. The league is an administrator rules that the owners/NHLPA and the parties have agreed upon It's the 31 individual owners that make or lose money. The total league revenues might have been expected to be 5 billion this season...No reason to think that total revenues this is now just 4 billion.

This is going to be a very interesting case study to see how the league and through NHLPA go forward. By all accounts the new contract talks were going well, could this cause a problem, maybe? The cap is going down, as I doubt the league starts up to crown a champ or at least a very scaled down cup winner. Many teams were lobbying for a hybrid 24 team playoff. I believe if we get started by May they could stage something but it would not be 7 game series.

The cap did not go up very much last year due to top teams being eliminated early. The remainder of the season being cut short and a shortened playoff could have the same affect.

Face it until we hear if and or when we can continue all options are on the table.

My prediction is if the 19-20 season is cancelled altogether, the cap will decrease and we will see some buyout help from league. There are a few teams that realistically could not be compliant without some form of help from the league in the form of a "compliance buyout".

If the season resumes at any point so that a decent amount of playoffs can be played, the cap will stay flat and no buyout help will come as teams will sufficient means to payroll at the current cap amount.

It really all comes down to IF the NHL can play 19-20 season hockey again. It really is too early to know right now.

If I throw a wild guess out there, the 19-20 season will be cancelled eventually. Witht the way the spread is going on in the US, this is going take well into the summer to just to get to a point where lockdowns and self isolation is starting to get better. Simply not enough time IMO

Let's hope Marco is right, that there is 2020/21 season. Not so much for just hockey, but everyone is getting back to work and the economic, social, and health downward spiral we're in now, ends soon.
