A Crazy Idea for a Trade

Description
A deal that would never, ever happen. Slavin is an example of an untouchable player, with one exception: if we can get an elite #1 center with him as the main piece. Tavares would certainly fit that bill, which would allow Aho to move to his natural LW position.

Aho is an elite #1 center.

The trade wouldn’t be bad if tavares was 2-3 years younger.

Aho is an elite top-line player. He isn't really a natural center because he's really bad at faceoffs. Many times, Brindy uses Staal for crucial faceoffs to swap Aho with him right afterwards. I would only ever move Aho away from the center spot if Tavares (or an equivalent elite true centerman) could be acquired. He's too important for our center depth otherwise. I'm not really concerned about Tavares using his NMC to block a trade to the Canes: I think that Carolina's one of those emerging perennial contenders that would be an attractive destination for just about any player.

Mrazek would be a good goalie for you guys. Read up on Mrazek's analytics. His SV% is quite misleading, because the Canes are simultaneously a great shot suppression team and a team that gives up tons of high-danger chances. He therefore faces few shots but also very dangerous shots, which skews his SV% downward.

I wonder if Stevie Y would be amenable to a deal for Jones. They could care less about bad goaltending right now and the Abdelkader buyout is considerably less toxic than Jones's is due to one less year and a lack of signing bonuses. Because Jones can still play and Abdelkader is completely dead wood, maybe the Wings send you back a 6th or 7th.

As a Leaf fan I am more than ok with getting rid of Tavares' contract for those 2 players and our pick back...need to get out of one of the big contracts and due to his age Tavares would be my first choice

Maybe for Matthews, but not Tavares. Tavares isn't exactly an upgrade on Aho, Aho would be the 2C playing his natural C position. People forget he played C for Karpat, and for Finland, he is a C. Svech and TT on one set of wings, Nino and Necas on the other is interesting, but Slavin isn't moving

There's enough quality LH depth on our team, especially if Fleury keeps developing in the same trajectory that he showed this season, for Skjei to be relatively sheltered. Just because I technically wrote him in on the 1st pairing doesn't mean that he'll necessarily get 1st pairing minutes.

Tavares is an upgrade on Aho in terms of pure centermen responsibilities, particularly on faceoffs. Putting Aho and Tavares on the same line frees up Aho to keep scoring goals at an elite level while reducing the amount of faceoffs that he needs to take. If you want to keep Aho at the #1 center spot, you can move Tavares down to #2 center, Staal to #3 center, and then nix the Bonino/Dzingel swap.

Aho is a natural C and is better offensively, and at everything a C does between whistles. There is no need for Tavares. We have a 1C, this is incredibly hindering for the team

Trade is a joke.

A top pairing D-man, a young elite number one center, and a first round pick for a elite number one center. Tavares is very good but so are the other two pieces from Carolina and they are younger.

Trocheck isn’t elite or a 1C, but I agree I would not make this trade if I were Carolina. Slavin + trocheck > tavares right now - but if tavares was 27 YO I’d make this trade. He’s turning 30 soon.

It isn't hindering to the Canes at all, if you go by Dom L.'s GSVA (game score value added) score. Slavin and Trocheck, when combined, has approximately the same GSVA as Tavares by himself. Tavares has a better GSVA than Aho by about .4. At the very worst, you would have an elite 1-2-3 C combo if you keep Aho at 1C, potentially competitive with Pittsburgh or Edmonton's group. In what way is the trade that I proposed detrimental to the team?

If you go by RAPM, Slavin is one of the best D men in the league and trocheck is a top 6C. Aho is also better defensively than Tavares. This makes no sense, not for Tavares. I like the idea, but the target is wrong

The question is not Aho or Tavares, but Aho AND Tavares. Getting elite players, no matter the position, and figuring out how to fit them later is a good way to run a hockey team. The debate that I was having was if moving Aho away from the faceoff circle would be beneficial to the team if an elite centerman like Tavares was acquired, or if it is better for Aho to stay at 1C and Tavares to be assigned to 2C.

It doesn't matter. Aho is a C, he's played on the wing during the season and his numbers have gone down the toilet. He's a C now, he's playing his natural position. He's staying there because it's whats best for him. That means Tavares isn't needed. I think you're better off targeting a winger
