Description
If there are compliance buyouts I would suggest that buyout either Zaitsev or Ryan, I lean towards Zaitsev and then making a trade for a d-man like Demers in Arizona.

  1. Johnson, Jack (750 000 $ retained)
  2. Murray, Matt [Droits de RFA]
  3. Choix de 3e ronde en 2020 (PIT)
Détails additionnels:
Ottawa gets a guy who needs a change of scenery, and probably will be a cap casualty in Pittsburgh. He has playoff experience and by time this team will be competing for the playoffs he can be the clutch guy they need. I believe this tough season will just be a write off. Johnson is a cap dump, but a good veteran who can also be serviceable as a bottom pair guy (at times).

  1. Nilsson, Anders

  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2020 (NYI)
  4. Choix de 2e ronde en 2020 (CBJ)
Détails additionnels:
Nilsson brings solid backup goaltending to a pens team on a reasonable salary. Reilly played solidly in Ottawa and can be a solid number 6, at worst a number 7/8 guy and is on an expiring deal.

I say stick with Nillsson till hes done he has got a year left. U got a great goalie in hogberg. Pitrangelo may not want to go to ottawa for that little but who knows, if there is going to be a complementary buyout buy bobby rein out bring him back for less. And maybe consider looking at Toronto (I posted a trade Idea Johnsson and Kerfoot for your NYI first which some have said is good. It would speed up the rebuild and make u one step closer to cup contention. Anyways not bad.

I doubt we bring in Murray when we have Hogberg and Nilsson next season. If Nilsson doesn't extend I could see us bringing in someone really cheap like DeSmith though. That's a big overpayment for Borowiecki. I could see him getting under $2 mil for 2-3 years at the most. Sabourin (hasn't been physical since the concussion) and Englund (trash) are likely gone after this season.

by the time nillsons contract ends there are a few goalies they can go after (Anderson, Binnington, Allen, Ranta, Rask, etc) so no concerns there. And yeah some of those contracts are not good which is why i suggested looking at toronto. Johnsson and Kerfoot could fit in nicely and giving a low first round pick is risk free for them

there is not nearly enough of a return here for the penguins to do this.
At a bear minimum you'd be taking JJ and Bjugstad in with Murray to make it worth the cap relief for the penguins and they are keeping their 2nd round pick.

One bad stretch isn't enough to ship off a young goalie who's been lock down for most of his career.

1. I like Nilsson and Hogberg as a tandem, but I know that Melnyk wants this team to be more competitive starting next year, and I think an upgrade in net could be used, cuz while I like Hogberg's potential for now that's all it is, potential. You shouldn't hesitate on bringing in a solid number 1 in Murray, and since his contract is only two years if Hogberg proves in that time he's the better player to have for the future.

2. My thoughts on Pietrangelo wanting to come to Ottawa is that, he's a kid born in Ontario, and returning to his home province could be tempting for him (Toronto is technically closer to his hometown of King City, but they can't afford his services.). They have a ton of cap space and can give him the most lucrative contract in the league, outside of Detroit or New Jersey, yes they're still rebuilding, but I believe in 2 years this team with these moves could make the playoffs, and in about 4 years be contenders if they're prospects pan out. Also DJ Smith is a good coach in my eyes who seems to get the most out of his players, which is attractive for free agents.

3. Also I like the Johnsson and Kerfoot deal for picks idea, but I believe this team has the offensive depth to not need them as they have players of similar caliber already on the team.

4. If they offer compliance buyouts maybe use it on Ryan, but after everything he's been through and just 2 years left on his deals, with not too many major deals pending I believe he could be a great veteran for the lineup. Instead I would maybe use that on Zaitsev considering how much of a liability he can be defensively, and sign a different 2nd pair d-man, or trade for somebody e.g. Demers, or Goligoski in ARI, or Brodin in Minnesota.

1. I wasn't sure how to properly gauge Borowiecki's value tbh, but he's had a good season that warrants more than under 2mil, I'd say a 3yr/7.5mil deal sounds reasonable.

2. Did not know that about Sabourin but he is a heart and soul type of player, and keeping his services should be a on the list for Ottawa, and by next year with time off and hopefully proper recovery he can get back to his hard hitting ways.

3. Did not know Englund was trash will make a move to adjust to that.

May I ask what you would recommend Ottawa adds, or if Pittsburgh adds a bad player e.g. Johnson?

True I was doing it as if Ottawa buys low on Murray and Pittsburgh does it to help with the cap, also I had PIT give up a 3rd, but I have adjusted to Ottawa giving another second, plus Mike Reilly and taking Johnson back at a retained salary.

Pens aren’t gonna sell low on Murray. He’s still our guy, despite what the haters may say
