Detroit doesn't trade their first for that and Toronto definitely doesn't trade Marner for that, certainly not while retaining salary.

The Detroit trade is stupid (They are not trading away a pick that may get them Laferniere especially for that package)
The Toronto trade is stupid (Nowhere near enough for Marner)
And you're going to have to send a late pick or a minor prospect with Smith as compensation for taking his salary.

Oh and to top it all off, this team is definitely not a cup contender..............not yet at least.

I get Lafreniere is a great talent, but I’m not understanding why he needs to fetch more. He hasn’t played a single game & we don’t know if he’ll be a blue chip yet, so his value shouldn’t be too high. In this trade, Detroit is getting 2 high end wingers & a top 4 defenseman. That’s a already significant package. As for Marner, yeah he could probably fetch more, but the Leafs are desperate for cap relief plus they need a top 4 RHD. Nylander is a promising young player too.

Lol wait that Detroit trade was for Lafreniere? I thought it was for Drysdale and I wouldn't do it.

Lafreniere at worst projects to be A 1st liner, and at best could be the next legitimate superstar winger in the NHL. Nothing coming back from Chicago matches the potential that Lafreniere will bring. Saad is an adequate 2nd liner, and while I personally really like him, he's never been able to drive results one his own. Kubalik had a good rookie season, but at 24, he's unlikely to grow beyond what he is. Maatta is straight up just not very good in my opinion.

Looking at the Detroit trade. That pick at worst will be fourth overall. Now Maatta couldn't beat out Jack Johnson for a spot in last years playoffs. Saad is very good but at 27 he is at the top of his game do you think he wants to spend it on a rebuilding team. Kubalik well he's having a phenomenal rookie season. Ok lets say the trade goes through. Detroit gets 1 year of Saad before he goes to a contender and he probably never wants anything to do with Chicago again for sending him to Detroit in his prime. Kubalik probably won't get those numbers in Detroit at least till Detroit becomes a contender again. I don't think that is worth a top 4 pick in this years draft.

I'm going to attempt to break this down from Chicago's pov, so go easy on me if I'm off. With Kane, Towes and Keith still on the team and not part of any real trade talks means Chicago wants to take another run at cup with this core. Chicago's 1st round pick in last seasons draft supports that, Dach was NHL ready right out of the gate. So do you really they are going trade away 2 very good forwards for player that probably won't join the team for a season or two? Chicago is far closer to the playoffs not making this trade. With how wide open the west is they are a good free agent or two and a maybe a trade away from competing again.

This is definitely a CapFriendly trade, Both teams come out of it worse than they were before the trade.

This trade will never happen but It isn't as bad as I thought it was.

I’m honored to be tagged in this.

Looking at the team yeah this is great. I’d replace Koekkoek with Mitchell. I think one more Dman has to go, likely De Haan for spare parts given his injury history, because I firmly believe Seabrook will be ready for next season. He won’t be any good, but he’ll be ready and he’s not a scratch candidate.

But to be fair, these teams don’t make these trades. Laf will be an 18 year old NHL player and Saad is 27 and Kubalik is 24. So they’re 9 and 6 years older than Laf respectively. It’s a bad move short and long term by Detroit who don’t have the prospects/team in place to consider themselves “a few FAs away from a playoff spot”. The Toronto trade value is just very off. Shaw is a LTIR candidate so that’ll help their cap situation but Murphy and Nylander for Marner is a robbery.

Yeah well even if Kubalik doesn’t improve, he’ll be a 30 goal guy for the next few years which is pretty damn good. Saad will get to play with Larkin & Veleno in DET, so he should be fine. Maatta has been great for Chicago. He’s reestablished himself after a brutal season with the Pens. The Wings fixed a lot of issues by trading Lafreniere. This gets them closer to the playoffs.

Well, I respect your opinion. You are probably right about Saad, but Detroit is getting 3 quality NHL players that’ll help speed up their rebuild & get them quicker to the playoffs. As for Chicago, their defense is a little young, so they might struggle, but it’s a stacked lineup undoubtedly.

Thanks for responding! You are probably right about Seabrook. As for Lafreniere, I think the trade is good for Detroit cuz they get 2 good top 6 forwards & a solid defenseman. Lafreniere is a huge talent but we’ll never know if he’ll become a legend. As for marner, yeah Hawks could probably add, but Leafs got their RHD which is most important.

2 good players and Maatta (he is not good) and since Saad would only be with Detroit this puts both teams further away from being contenders.

Maatta is good. You saw him during the 2 cup runs eh? He made some mistakes, but he was a very solid top 4 defenseman. If you don’t want Saad, you can trade him for a first round pick and top prospect. That compensates the loss of Lafreniere.

Do you think Kubalik will shoot 20% for his career? There will be regression next season. Still a good player, but I don't know that he's a consistent 30 goal guy.

Detroit needs elite, top line support more than they need complimentary depth, and you get that by drafting. Even if this trade puts Detroit "closer to the playoffs", without elite talent to surround Larkin, they'd still be further away from contending.

Well maybe Kubalik will become a good 20 goal guy, which is still awesome. Him & Saad are legit top 6 wingers. DET have Bertuzzi, Fabbri, Veleno, Larkin & Mantha already in the mix so this makes their Forward group tremendous. Detroit also gets a solid top 4 defenseman to help mentor the young core of Cholowski, Hronek, Seider & McIssac. They just need a bit experience & they’re good.
