When the Cap is Flat Trades must be made

Description
Trade idea #2 for the Flat Cap whereby Nylander goes (I am sorry to all leaf fans). I love Nylander and seeing him prove his haters wrong has been great but with the flat cap he is the most likely out of the big 4 to go. As with a flat cap no team will fully take marner and his 10.8 without retaining which with the team almost at the spending point i dont see dubas willing to do that unless the trade is insane (a 1st, top 4 rd + ). So with Nylander gone this is what the team could potentially look like.

lul canucks would love to aquire kerfoot the kid is on a good contract and is way better than gaudette who is on an expiring contract and with Markstrome needing to be resigned its a win win for both teams as not only do you get a proven third line center at a reasonable contract but u trade away a guy who has been in the league the same number of years and has only just started to improve.

with the cap staying at 81.5 or potentially going lower Dubas may have no other choice but to trade nylander, kerfoot, and johnsson. Toronto does not have an issue scoring. Its defense and depth thats the main issue. This season Toronto's defense has been terrible and the Top 2 lines are getting most of the goals. And yes I know Nylander has 30 goals and stuff but with a flat salary dubas may need to trade him. If kadri can go nylander can as well escpecially if the return is just as good as what the kadri one was. The changes I propose should help Toronto not only bolster up the defense but boost scoring chances on all 4 lines. If I could figure out a way to trade marner with no need for salary retention I would but thanks to Coronavirus and low cap projections its just likely to happen.

and yes the roster was gutted but sometimes change is a good thing on a team, especially with this team needing to win a cup before Matthews contract expires and he probably goes to the Coyotes. But by than people will be asking when is Mcdavid coming home lul

I do not think the islanders would decline. the main issue with the islanders is there scoring seems to be an huge issue. Nylander would eliminate that issue, especially if paired with barzel next season. as for dermott he would fit in nicely in the islanders system and through some development could be a solid top 4 ld or rd

The islanders dont need dermott, he’d be behind pelech and toews on the depth chart (LHD) and Barry trotz doesn’t usually like playing defenseman on their offside. We’re trading our #1 D and 2 LW for a 1 RW and and a 3rd pairing D. This doesn’t make sense for the islanders right now. Pulock for nylander makes sense when Noah Dobson develops into a #1 D, which won’t happen until the end of next season or the season after.

Well it's either going to be a trade for nylander if he's available or if Lou is still interested Parise who at 35 is a big risk while nylander at 23 is safe

The parise trade is likely done after it was leaked. I think the islanders will attempt to sign one of hall/Hoffman

I don’t think Dubas would trade nylander.

Well no one thought kadri was going but anything can happen. Dubas has to look at that flat cap and go how can I make this team better. Cause let's face it that blue line will look terrible if they don't shed cap

Buying marner out would make dubas look bad. Despite being overpayed marner Isa playmaker and rn dbas is probs looking at trading Johnson kerfoot and possibly liligren or dermott

Trouble with the flat cap theory and how the Leaf can trade away excess cap......rarely do folks make these Leafs posts consider the cap of the other teams. What team actually have cap available? And the ones that do are in a buyer market...they don't have to give up equal one ice value.

Gutting the roster sure didn’t wrk this year. Why has everyone decided that Matthews is leavintbo okay for a team who can’t afford him?

See Tavares? See how he went home? Ya, Matthews will prolly do the same. Except, Matthews ain't from Toronna, he's from Scottsdale. He grew up a Yotes fan. He'll go home if the opportunity presents itself to do so.

that is certainly one way to make the team worse and get ripped off very very badly in 2 major trades.
But the cap works and that's all that matters!

i love how ONE player goes home and suddenly it's the norm. How many superstars stuck with the team that drafted them? like all of them, like 99.99999999% of ones who weren't traded stuck with their team and we've still got people freaking out about matthews running off to Arizona, a team that may not even exist when his contract is up.

Actually with those 2 trades defense receives a major boost and. scoring depth is increased cause let's face it next year if they don't trade we are going to have to outscore our problems and we will have a horrific right sided defense core in dermott, liligren, holl and with the team wanting to win a cup that right side defense will not work

those trades do not make the leafs better, any defensive addition is completely obliterated by the loss of value up front. The difference between Dermott and Pulock isn't Kerfoot, let alone Nylander.
as far as the Miller trade goes, you do realize he cant even make the Buffalo sabres line up right? A defence that is just as bad, if not worse than the leafs? flat out horrible from both a value and a need standpoint

Miller is just having a bad year in buffalo, pair him with muzzin u may get the guy who was in vegas and getting rid of johnson is a must that 3.4 mill with the season he has had this year nope trade him for another struggling player (miller), bracco aint making the line up anytime soon let alone kihulme so they are gone. Pulock would be a significant upgrade over dermott hes one of the islanders best defenseman and would give that blue line a boost. Yes Goal scoring would decrease but next year if one of the big 4 isnt trades what u want that blue line to be (Rielly-Liligren, Muzzin Holl, Sandin-Dermott) u think thats any better. If thats the case lets keep nylander and try to score our way to the cup and have leave freddie to do 90% of the work. As for kerfoot getting a guy like gaudette makes sense, cheaper, plays almost the same, and with a flat cap why not.

Miller is a depth defender who performed well when sheltered and he got over paid for it. It's a bad trade flat out because he cannot play in the top 4 for an extended period and he's too expensive to play on the bottom pairing. The money is better spent on a guy who actually belongs in the top half of the roster like Johnsson.

And again, on the nylander trade, you do not trade a player of significantly more value for a guy because he fills a need, that is how you get Hall for Larsson. It is a bad trade it makes the team worse. You can galaxy brain your way into convincing yourself that its for some greater good, but its crap. Its a bad trade.
