Description
Honestly, I don’t think any team could’ve beat Washington in 2018. That was their year & you knew they were simply unstoppable especially after they made it past the 2nd round at last. That said, I was still very disappointed the Pens didn't 3peat. They didn't play well enough plain & simple. Obviously you need your top guns to be relatively healthy to go on a run and we didn't have that, but I felt these moves could've given us a better chance:

2016 Offseason - Pens trade Beau Bennett, Derrick Pouliot & 1st Round Pick to Leafs for Phil Kessel

2017 Offseason - Pens trade Conor Sheary + 1st Round Pick to Wings for Mike Green (50% Retained Salary)

2018 Trade Deadline - Pens trade Patric Hornqvist, Ian Cole, Filip Gustavsson & 1st Round Pick to Leafs for Mitch Marner

We could've had this team for that season instead. Also could’ve reverted the David Perron Matt Barzal trade, but we ended up getting Carl Hagelin who became an crucial part of the team’s success. He was still really good in 2017/18.

What’d you guys think of my hindsight team for 2017/18? Do you think this team could’ve had a better chance at beating the Caps & 3peating? What would you have done differently?

Yeah Marner wasn’t having a good season. He fell off the depth chart behind Marleau, JVR, Nylander, Hyman, Brown & Komarov. Found himself on the fourth line. The Leafs were willing to listen to offers at that time, hoping for a young defenseman in a similar situation or a package like that.

Oh, this team absolutely has a better shot of winning. The pens couldn’t catch a break(ex.that hornqvist goal that was clearly over the goaline) and still took the caps to OT in game 6 . A goal here or there and everything can change. I never liked Okeksiak though...He and Bjugstad are the softest biggest guys ever. Oleksiak was supposed to neutralize the big dudes(Wilson), but ZAR had that broken jaw thing...

That probably would have helped the Leafs financially, maybe Nylander would have signed right away, perhaps the team could have found their RHD.

Yeah Caps got lucky with the Hornqvist goal called back. He was great during that playoffs. I agree with you on Oleksiak. He wasn’t an intimidating guy at a guy. He had a good slap shot & was a solid stay at home guy but he really didn’t provide the nastiness you expected at his size. It was unfortunate that ZAR went out because he was a really good defensive Forward. Although that series Geno, Phil, Brassard, Sheary & Letang all played horrible.

Agree the Leafs could’ve locked Nylander long term at 8 million, signed Tavares & signed a defenseman at free agency like Doughty. They would have had almost 14 million in relief without Kapanen and Marner.

Brassard is garbage and should only play for dumpster fire teams. Geno was injured though too...Geno and Phil turned into the toxic twins...only passed to each other and were just horrible defensively. Every hockey fan should cheer every time Tom Wilson gets destroyed...

To be honest I was real excited when we got Brass. He was really good in NYR centering the top line w/Nash & Zuccarello. Skill level was tremendous & scored a lot. Unfortunately he had attitude problems & was unwilling to improve the defensive side of the game to thrive as a 3C on a contending team. They gave up a huge package for him & could’ve used it for Marner instead.
