When did you get a chance to take Marner?

In the first half of 2017/18, Marner really struggled to find his game. Him & Babcock weren’t on good terms & he got put on the fourth line with Moore & Martin as a result. At that point, he was on verge of becoming a bust. The Penguins should’ve taken the chance to trade for him instead of Brassard.

They would trade him if the price was right. I offered a significant package in this trade.

Duchene, Zibanejad, Stone, Karlsson etc. A legit contender for sure. Too bad they all hated the owner.

Kahun doesnt have an NTC so he has no say about where he goes. Wings can always trade him back to CHI for Andrew Shaw.

I agree but in my hindsight team, I still had Phil. I just traded a different package to get him, then dealt him for Zucker like in real life. Pens in 17/18 would’ve been a force that could’ve 3 peated with a line up like this:

              Jake-Sid-Kappy
              Hags-Geno-ZAR
              Simon-Marner-Kessel
              ZAR-Sheahan-Kunhackl

              Dumo-Tanger
              Määttä-Niskanen
              Oleksiak-Ruhwedel

              Murray
              DeSmith

Could’ve traded Sheary for a defenseman better than Ruhwedel as well.

Impossible to know if those trades would have gone through...as we can't read GMs minds...I get you love Marner, but he didn't take a discount to play with the stars there, who says he would have here?
In 2016, HBK may never have been found with Marner on the team...with Kappanen and Marner, I think the pens might have fallen into the trap of trying to outscore their mistakes a year or two early...more skill isn't always better. Exhibit A-toronto.
GMJR also went through that phase of trying to acquire toughness and grit...who knows what happens then?
Anyway, hindsight, as evidenced, is much better than 20/20. Its especially true in drafts, where studs like Guentzel, kucherov, and many more didn't go 1st round.
I'm fine with the team because with hindsight, pretty much anything's on the table.

Thanks for commenting. The thing with Marner was that in Toronto, none of the star players took a discount, so as he was negotiating with his comparables, he had no reason to either. In Pittsburgh it’s a different situation cuz you’ve got Sid taking less, Geno with a good contract, Jake taking a big discount. Marner would have way less leverage to get grossly overpaid. For my hindsight team, I still had Kessel on it during then 2015-16 & 2016-17 cup runs. The reason why he’s not on this team is cuz it’s the current season & I still had him being dealt to ARZ for the package that ended up being Zucker. The Pens have tried to become a bigger more physically intimidating team by bringing in Reaves & Gudbranson, but we’ve realized that they play at their best when they have a lineup suited for playing with speed, skill & high intensity. The issue with the Leafs is that they don’t have intensity. There’s not enough checking. On this hindsight team, they do have that. They have the guys that are willing to go into the dirty areas & play a grinding sandpaper type game like Rust, ZAR, Zucker, Tanev, McCann, Blueger & Bertuzzi. That’s plenty of guys who can compliment the finesse of the skilled guys.

I still had Kessel on my hindsight team during those cup runs, I traded Bennett, Pouliot & 1st to acquire him & retained Kapanen. He got dealt afterwards just like in real life.

The team is fine now, I think...I just meant in 16,17,18,19...there might not have been enough glue guys but now we have enough....
Very fair point about Marner taking a discount with Guentzel as a comparable...Although some people are just greedy..."the love of money is the root of all evil" if you know what I mean. Possibly Marner would have ended up taking a bridge like Laine...especially considering he might have played 3rd line and not developed quite as much at this point...

Yes that would’ve been a possibility as well. 5-6 million for 2-3 year term & then Kessel gets moved opening a spot for him in the top 6.

Definetly a nice looking roster. Marner should be on the top line though

Thanks for commenting. I believe Marner would look great with Sid, but I have Kapanen because of his speed. Him & Zucker are gonna do some serious trouble to opposing teams’ defense.

Duchene, Zibanejad, Stone, Karlsson etc. A legit contender for sure. Too bad they all hated the owner.

They had Lehner and bishop as goalies also...
