NJD 2021

Description
Devils decide to not buyout Cory Schneider but get themselves issurance in Mike Smith. They'll sort things out on the goaltending position at the start of the season and will therefore start with 3 goalies on the roster until eventually one of Smith/Schneider will be traded or waived.

Söderberg will join the Devils in UFA to give them some veteran leadership in their bottom 6 (Devils are the only team willing to give him 2 years). Same for Polak but only for one year.

Devils draft with all three of their 2020 first round selections (my personal preference would be 2 d-men, 1 winger) and send them back to their respective teams.

All is bad. Miles Wood isn't a cap black hole. Why would we also trade a former 16th overall pick 4 years ago and a 3rd for an aging and injured defenseman?

I know this team is far from looking good and won't be anywhere around playoff contention. But that's my understanding of the "aquire placeholders" thing that Fitzgerald talked about at the deadline.

I don't see Wood's value higher than that after the last two seasons. I'd even say he wouldn't be a regular on many teams and for that his contract is terrible.

Same with McLeod (look back at what we got for Quenneville who also was a former first rounder). No one cares about where he was drafted, the results just aren't there.

I couldn't disagree with your statement more

Wood is 24 and an absolute wrecking ball. If he's smart, he'll train with a guy like oates and work on finishing some of the grade a chances he creates. Hes big, fast, and a matchup nightmare. you don't give away guys like that. on top of that youre trading a prospect to get back an awful pick. who does this help? we're not even cap strapped we have enough money to sign half a roster this offseason.

im undecided on the mcleoud trade, idc if we trade him tbh, i'm unsure if cole is the guy to package him for. Maybe, hes certainly having a fine year

For me Mueller, Wood and McLeod all are players that we expected more from in the past. Sometimes it's just time to get behind something and that's why I'd trade all of them. But I agree with you: We are not forced (financially and all other aspects) to make any of those moves.

And if you look at my ACGM I've got 3 rookies/young players with very little experience in our bottom 6 and that's also very unlikely to happen.

im all aboard mueller and mcleoud - i just personally don't understand the hate against wood (from everyone). my theory is that he has so many chances and doesnt bury that many but would you rather someone that buries a higher percentage of the time but generates very little chances? and in reality hes still so young and his production isn't going to lead to a large contract so hes an incredibly valueable depth piece imo

"Hate" is the wrong word. But he definitely has his weaknesses: to one dimensional, takes stupid penaltys...
