What an awful trade for NSH. They won't trade for Ristolainen and they won't give up their best goalie prospect, their best minor league forward who is playing some in the NHL this season, and one of their top D prospects, PLUS two 2nds for an objectively bad defenseman. Sure, he can put up some points, but he is not a great player. And who does NSH protect now for the expansion draft with Josi, Ellis, Ekholm, Fabbro, and now Ristolainen?? Preds with the hard pass. No no no.

the protect who they would to begin with
now they have a rental they can expose for a dirt cheap price .

your logic is flawed because VGK got more then that out of teams trying to protect players .
Reilly Smith and Alex Tuch were both included into deals for Haula and Marchesault to protect i believe it was Dumba and Trochek if memory serves
NSH gives up project pieces and picks to draft project pieces . . .

P.s Risto is 6th in NHL hits as he usually is and a 40 point regular with a CF/FF% that is 45% on average on a bad team historically as a rule with no exceptions .
Commons sense says his defensive numbers improve once he joins his first NHL team .(BUF is at best an AHL team pretending to be an NHL team who occassionally drafts a All Star who will always leave to a real NHL team to find success just like AHL players do )

My logic is flawed? Why? Because I don't want to have to give up good players like the teams you mentioned to keep certain players? That FLA move to ditch Smith and Marchessault was awful and everyone thinks so. No fan wants their team to do that... I don't want to give up prospects and picks on top of the prospects and picks to trade for and then protect a non-essential player in Ristolainen. Where is the flaw in that thinking? And if you expose Ristolainen like you seem to be implying, why even trade for him???

And Ristolainen would not really fit on the team anyways. Josi and Ellis are secure on PP1 and PP2, respectively. I don't really seem him supplanting either player for PP time -- maybe some PP2 time. And he is not the best defensive dman in the game either, so he doesn't really help their PK or defense which is what NSH needs way more than another D that can put up around 40 points.

Again, NSH is not giving up their best goalie prospect (with Rinne one year from retirement), their most NHL ready prospect, and one of their best d prospects, and 2 2nd round picks for a second pair defenseman -- that is not a "dirt-cheap price" and they don't need it. Not to mention the cap-hit. NSH would much rather have cheap players like Farrance, Trenin, and Ingram than a $5m+ defenseman that they don't need.
