Description
Due to cap going up, process to dump large amounts of $ goes down

Also we win the lotto, and pick at three
Targets:
#3 Raymond-I still believe he is ready, but "my sources" say Frolunda really wants to keep him, and will play him a bunch next year... He comes in with Zegras the year after
#14 (via NYR) Mysak or Gunler, I don't like the RD available near here (Drysdale is gone, I'll get to my number 2 next) so I'll go with the highest ceiling player, Mysak is a real sleeper, he was nearly as good, if not better than Stutzle in the WJC and has been great since coming to Hamilton (especially for his first sustained time on NA ice) Gunler is another solid option, one of the older players, has a solid shot, we definitely need that
#24 (via BOS) I have Niemela as my number 2 RHD rn... Right around here, he would have to fall slightly, and BOS can't go on a run, but we can always trade up or target:
#36 Helge Grans, my number 3 RHD, if either him or Neimela is taken, and Khusnutdinov is still available at either if these picks, we jump on him immediately
3rd rounders, maybe trade down, take guys that are falling, maybe a guy with injury concerns, or smth... Just high potential guys, I like Jaromir Pitlyk, and William Villeneuve maybe trade down, in terms of later draft picks quantity usually>>>quality
With the later picks some guys I wouldn't mind are Chibrikov (he's big... That's fun...) Or two overagers in Oksentyuk and Constantinou

Rangers decline.

1. They will not trade a 2020 first round pick to get out of the Staal contract that is set to expire after next season.
2. They will be able to move Smith after July 1st along with a 4th/5th round pick for a 7th or something along that line.

If you get 3 why not trade back to 4 to take Raymond, Stutzle likely goes at 3 so maybe you could get some more stuff by doing that

I think that the Boston pick is locked into #27 (if they lose in the first or second round), #29 (if they lose in the Conference finals), or ##30-31 (if they get to the Cup finals).

I'd pay up to $2 million for Derek Grant. But then, I'm an extremist.

Take out the second from the Rangers trade and add one of ours: Antoine Morand. Now maybe the NY guys won't whine about value.

Agreed on your first point. NYR really isn't in desperate need to move Staal's contract. Plenty of cap space and very few players due massive upgrades. However, care to explain why anyone is taking on Brenden Smith's cap hit for a 4th or 5th round pick?

Deslaurier's isn't getting moved. He's been very good for us and is a character type player we need more of.

Assuming BOS stays where they are now (I don't see TB beating them), that is correct.

$2 million on Grant is a little steep for me, but I'd go up to $1.5M. He doesn't do much wrong. The 12-15 goals is just a bonus.

26-27, Tampa def still has a chance to pass them, idk about anyone from the east, but if we do what you're suggesting in the NYR trade, we're getting less value back than CAR did for taking on Marleau Morand=3rd, his stock has fallen, Larsson=2nd+minor piece was generally the agreed upon trade iirc, and 2nd+3rd+minor piece=late first... so we'd be giving up roughly a late first in value, only getting one 5-10 spots higher, and taking on an extra 4 mil...

I mean, they aren't necessarily desperate, but they have roughly 20 mil (in this ACGM) to sign ADA (at least 6 with the MP contract at 5 or whatever I'd have to assume) Georgiev probably close to three, Strome at least 3.1, likely more (4ish) that leaves 7 to sign a few players to fill out the roster, it'd be tightish, they were the best team I could find that actually has short term bad contracts, and would be willing to pay to move them, especially bc they're NYR... they're gonna want to sign someone big in FA lol... eveyone else with bad contracts has cap space now lol, agree on the second point

I just don't really know where Deslauriers fits... maybe instead of Jones, but i doubt the, i mean we can keep him and move someone else if needed though, irdc

yeah, and idk why, but I could see Grant taking a small discount to come back to ANA

I don't think the Rangers give up their first-round pick without getting more than just Larsson, even in order to rid themselves of Staal and Smith. Remember they're missing their second this June, too.

Let me get this straight... So we're taking on no less than three big cap hits, to go along with Backes and the huge bump from Perry's buyout, trading away two quality depth players, a promising young d-man who's just starting to settle in for basically some drafts picks and zero cap flexibility? Because this is basically our team now when healthy. We already have two first rounders and we had two last year. If we're going to use our cap space to our advantage, shouldn't we use it make our team better now? If we're just doing it to acquire picks that seems like a waste of money. Never mind the fact that this would be behavior completely out of character for this team. Buying out Perry and taking on Backes were already bold moves for this team.

So you'd rather spend it on 28-29 year old UFA's that (based off most NHL GM's July 1 signings) will become cap dumps within a few years when the team is legitimately ready to win, but before then they just give us false senses of hope and ruin our chances at getting a high lotto pick, and unless we get like Petro or Hall, no UFA is gonna make that big of a difference to this team next summer... Every cap dump I took on was 1 year, and we got essentially a free first and a few other picks... And the first two trades aren't really necessary, I just would rather play the kids assuming they're ready, and it's not like Larsson is that valuable of a piece... He's a button pairing guy with LOW end top 4 ceiling... And on this team he's stuck behind Lindholm, Fowler*, and possibly Guhle and Mahura, along with LaCombe in a few years...

Mainly because of money owed. After his $1M signing bonus is paid on 7/1, he will be owed just $1.35M in real monies. For a cash strapped team (someone like Ottawa, etc.) who needs to reach the cap floor with little real cash, a deal like that makes sense. Hell even if the Rangers had to retain money it would work.

I wouldn't spend it on any free agent. We're not in desperate need for draft picks. I mean I wouldn't say no to another first but not at the expense at being so capped out. You can only stockpile so many teenagers, we don't need another first that badly. As for Larsson, I'm entirely opposed to moving him, just not for futures. D-men take a long time to develop and I'm sick and tired of moving young d-men only for them to finally flourish elsewhere. Not saying Larsson is definitely going to go that route but if we are going to pull off that kind of trade again it should be to fill an immediate hole. Because what's the end game? Trade him for a pick to draft a kid that we have to wait and develop? I'd much rather package him, Boston's 1st and Ricky for a top-pairing d-man (if that could even get the job done). Unless we have a crystal ball and know he's not going to progress beyond his level of play right now but we don't. I was stoked about the Pettersson trade at the time because I thought we were cutting bait on a kid who would never be strong enough to handle this league and getting good value for him. Ha! I think it's still too early to give up on Larsson, especially considering his progress this year.

If Murray has the green light to spend money like you're suggesting he should try to actually improve this team. There's no reason this team can't be competitive next year. These kind of moves just signal another tank year and I think that'll be counter-productive.
