Description
This is a revised version of a thread I posted a few days ago.

Burns trade summary:
To WPG:
- Brent Burns (5m/5yr)
- Jonathan Dahlén

to SJ:
- WPG 1st round pick (2021)
- WPG 3rd round pick (2021)
- Logan Stanley
- 1.5m retention

to NJD:
- WPG 2nd round pick (2022)
- COL 2nd round pick (2022)
- 1.5m retention

How this works for each team:
WPG:
Winnipeg's defense is a mess and they are in a position to compete for the next years, with Buff leaving they won't have any offensive presence on the blue line. Burns has been the top point producing D man in the NHL for a few years now (18-19: 83 points (1st), 17-18: 67 points (2nd), 16-17: 76 points (1st)), he can still provide lots of offense and with significant retention, 5m in a few years wont seem like much. Johnathan Dahlen is ready to come back next year and produce, he is fast and highly skilled with the puck.

SJ:
San Jose has a logjam at LW, Dahlen is fighting for a spot next year against quite a few players, and there probably wont be room for him to play top 6 for a long while. Brent Burns on the other hand just isn't working with San Jose anymore, and they need to free up one of their 3 big D contracts. Karlsson isn't going to move, and Vlasic isn't very popular elsewhere it seems. Moving Burns frees up a spot for a more Defensive minded Defense-man (like DeMelo), since Merkley will likely be playing next year.

NJD:
you have cap space, you need more picks, take it.

Notes:
- The trade could easily be a better prospect/player or a 2nd instead of a 3rd.
- Jones will probably be in the AHL next year, and a few more years until its worth it to buy him out.
- SJ RW is still pretty weak, so wouldn't be surprised if they manage a trade for a NHL RW.

Signings:
- Labanc: 4m/4yr; seems right to me, I don't see them trading him, since there is only 1 GOOD RW in the system at the moment.
- Lehner: 7.5m/5yr; seems like what Lehner will get on the market, Sharks need a goalie, and unless they feel like they can wait out a few years or make a trade now, Lehner seems like an attractive solution for SJ.
- DeMelo: 3.4m/4yr; Sharks could use some right handed Defensive D, with Burns moving, why not bring back Demelo since he is already familiar with the team.
- Dell: 2.5m/3yr; there needs to be a backup, right?
- Simek: 1m/2yr; he is going to be a bottom pair D, not going to cost much and not for very long
- Leonard: 925k/3yr; his stock has sky rocketed this year, and he could very well win the hobey baker. Don't see much chance he waits it out for FA since Ferraro also went to SJ.

Keep in mind these are very aggressive moves, and aren't likely to actually happen.

You can't retain more than 50% of a contract with Burns. And I don't think there's anyone who wants to have an already declining Brent Burns on their team until he's 40. I don't think the Sharks are going to be able to get out of any of their top 3 D's contracts without giving up something too valuable to give up, i.e. Meier, Hertl, multiple 1st, etc.

    1. Don't know where you got more than 50%
    2. Contenders for the next few years
    3. That's just stupid, Burns is still a very capable player (especially for 5m)

Im gonna keep it real, you didnt improve the team at all. Its more of a sell off move because you didnt add any new tools. Counting on 3 rookies to play top 9 is what screwed us this year

I meant as far as a 1st step toward a retool, I don't see the sharks being capable of being competitive next year, no matter what DW says. They need to get cap space and aquire picks before any other moves can be made.

Must've misread the NJ trade, thought it said 5M retention.
Contenders based on what? They've been garbage this year, and their stars are just getting older.
He's just about to turn 35 and has 5 years left. No one is going to touch that contract especially with his obvious dip in production this year. His defensive play has always been bad but his offense made up for it. Now his offense is starting to slow down and I wouldn't be surprised if it cratered in the next 2 years. Sharks are going to be on the hook for that whole thing unless they buy him out.

    1. oki
    2. Don't know if you thought I was talking about SJ, i'm talking about WPG contending, in which case they have a ton of offensive talent, they have just been devastated this year on defense.
    3. wont argue with you on this one, since it is very much subjective and no one really knows what will happen (for sure).
