Not enough for Marner and that 1st round pick would have to be without lottery protection.

Think you'd be the surprised one there bud. Dubas may have signed some debatable deals with players, but he's never made a bad trade to date. He's a pretty damn good negotiator

How was that a bad trade?

Basically Kadri and Hutchinson for Barrie and Kerfoot. He needed a top 4 right handed d-man and traded his 3C to get it. Plus he literally got his 3C replacement in the same deal AND he got Colorado to retain 50% on the top 4 d-man.. that is in no way shape or form a bad deal

I could see a deal that would potentially work for both teams, but the cost it will likely take to acquire Marner will probably not sit well with Islanders fans. I am think the only way the Leafs entertain a deal is if they are getting a couple signficant pieces back, such as Noah Dobson. Truth be told, I don't think there's a natural fit here for a trade to line up between these 2 clubs.

I agree I do think there's a match here and perhaps I didn't line it up well but truth to be told, Dobson hasn't been good this year at all. I still think he has a good chance to be legit but im not sure Toronto's window coincides with his development like that

barrie hasn't exactly been great and is almost certainly walking and they could seriously use Kadri's grit, in my opinion

Leafs still got more than enough value for a guy who showed he wasn't changing and hurting the team more than anything when it counted

Actually your thought is good. If the Leafs trade 11m Marner without receiving much cap in return, so they have cap to sign Pietrangelo, the Leafs are going to have to take a discount on Marner's trade value.
It might be more than you suggest, but IMO your thought process is accurate.

You will find that the norm for defenders is that they are slower to develop at their position, especially on the defensive side of things. There are obviously exceptions to the rule, but that's the norm. So, it's hard to project defenders.

Trading Marleau and a 1st for nothing was a good trade?.

Colorado won the Kadri - Barrie trade

Ottawa won the Zaitsev - Ceci trade

LA won the Campbell - Moore trade

Lol. You look at it so 1 dimensional.

Marleau trade for a 1st plus able to re-sign Marner long term and didn't even give up a roster player when that's what teams wanted.. advantage Leafs.

Colorado trade is a slight advantage to to Leafs but not much. They needed a top 4 right handed d-man and traded a 3C to get it.. and got a younger 3C back in the same deal. Hard to see how that's a loss.

Nobody won the Ottawa trade. Maybe a slight edge to Ottawa for Connor Brown but when Zaitsev had 5 years left and only Connor Brown was the sweetener for 4 years of cap relief? That's not a loss at all.

Lol. You think the Campbell/Clifford for Moore and 2 mid round picks was a loss? Might wanna rethink that if you actually watch the Leafs. Good one though. Lmao.

You're calling Dubas trading a 1st just to get rid of Marleau an advantage for the Leafs? You do realize Toronto had the option not to sign Ceci right? That would've saved them the 1st round pick and potentially keeping Marleau. Advantage Canes EASILY

They acquired a worse version of Gardiner and a fringe 3rd liner for an Elite #3 Center. When they originally made the trade, I said the Leafs easily won it (go ahead and check the comments of that trade), but looking at it now, it wasn't even close to fair for Toronto.

You can look at the Ottawa trade as a meh trade, but that Trade also costed you your first round pick. Nobody said they had to sign Ceci, everybody knew he was god awful. but they still signed him. Leading to them having to shed salary to sign Marner, (trading a 1st and getting nothing back). He might not be offensive, but at worst, he's still a shutdown 2nd pairing defensemen (isn't that what the Leafs need?). Connor Brown is just the cherry on top.

Sure the Campbell/Clifford trade was fair, but they gave up quality picks for something that won't take them over the top. Don't see Clifford resigning, so you essentially traded a 2nd and 3rd round pick for a 29 YO backup goalie.
