Well, there are a lot of factors at play here. Marleau had a NMC and he only wanted to return to SJS, so unless VAN was willing to buy him out as CAR did, he wouldn't have waived. The Leafs also needed to move Zaitsev, and Brown was the key part to doing that, so either the Leafs would still have Zaitsev or they would have had to trade another asset to get rid of him. I personally think Tanev is overrated as a shutdown guy, but hell, at least he's a serviceable Dman. Having said all that, I think this probably would have been about fair value at the time, but due to other situations that needed to be dealt with (Thanks Lou!!), no I don't think I would have rather done this trade.
