I really don't think it's on him. On paper, almost all of his trades have looked like steals. We all thought TOR fleeced COL for the Barrie deal. Then last year w/ the Muzzin deal. Even removing Zaitsev was seen as a good move.

The Clifford/Campbell trade in many's books was a win. The malgin trade looks promising. Engvall, Holl, Muzzin all signed to reasonable contracts.

You can't direct all of the blame on the GM for having players that won't try. The only last ditch effort would be to remove the source of the lacklustre effort. And if a trade involving any of the big names here happened, then TOR fans would take to the street.

This is all an overreaction. Let them miss the playoffs and have the players realize the consequences. The team doesn't necessarily get worse next year. That shock should do it. Firing Dubas now would be a mistake.

TOR might be able to fix some of their issues in 2 years.
After 21-22 season the new TV will get signed. That's looking at about 6-7 million per team more if they stay at one network. If they divide it and go to two networks, it could be far more.

I found it kind of surprising that Leafs did not trade Barrie at deadline which could be explained by Dubas realizing holding Barrie is his best bet to get Leafs into the playoffs and take some heat off himself. If Leafs miss the playoffs then someone is going to pay and it may be Dubas.

It's really hard to fix this team, when you lose to a Zamboni driver. Sorry i couldn't resists. LUL

Aynways, serious talk...
The biggest problem with Toronto is same as last year. Everywhere you can only see leaks/holes in the team.

Coaching = newbie AHL coach, you can say lots of bad things about Babcock, but he had success on NHL level = downgrade on the long run(same situation in Nashville land Laviolette > Hynes)
Team = no structure ( look at Islanders/Boston and copy that or get a coach like Bruce Boudreau, who had insane defensive structure in minnesota if Keefe cant copy other teams structures)
This 24/7 offense structure never works in the playoffs, except if u have guys, like Kane/Crosby who are above the whole nhl... Matthews is an insane goalscorer, that's it... when he is not in the O-zone problems start to appearing) Blocking shots = underrated

Forwards = not defending(stuck on O-zone or not coming back fast enough/ not working like a 5 man team, everyone needs to know their role)
Defenders = not good enough(too many mistakes) or rookies/newbies/offensive D-mans
Culture = need to change from losing culture to winning culture + give 100% every shift, not just coasting
Contracts = lots of overpayments(like the 11mill+ guys)
Team = top5 softest team(Clifford helps, but he is the first, you need a lot more)
Goaltending = fixed by Dubas(good job by him)

Overall Toronto Maple Leafs going through the same things, as tampa did... it will never work with that many offensive guys... next year the retool can start... i think dubas is not that bad... so i would give him at least 2 more years...
After the season is over, i would hire for start a good/respected coach who has proven on the NHL level. Like Gerrard Gallant/Laviolette.
Next step is probably sell 1 guy from those 4 big contracts and spend it on hard working shutdown type D-mans or defensive minded forwards.
Tampa got Coleman/Cirelli/Goodrow/Point who shutdown opponents scoring chances. Toronto needs to stock up on those hard working guys as well...
It's good to have a William Nylander on your team, but not in Toronto. 2 Clifford > 1 Nylander for playoffs results.
Regular season Toronto will be good in next 5 years no doubt about that, whatever will happen on the coaching/GM/players front...
But it's not what fans wants... they want the cup... so good luck to your GM to fixing this team.
It's possible, it's just hard... and takes a lot of time... (not 6-12 months)

I still hope you guys can make the playoffs and Tampa vs Toronto playoffs series 1st round.
Even though the outcome is probably predicatable, it will be huge fun. Afterall tampa still an offensive team, however hard we trying to fix our issues as well. smile
The fun is guaranteed for every fan. You only need to beat Florida for this to happen. Not that hard.
In the playoffs anything can happen, just get in smile

Firing Dubas would be a huge mistake. A lot of his moves have been to undo mistakes done by the previous GM (who just gave up 3 picks for JGP and put his team in cap trouble). I am sure Islander fans are happy he was stopped from taking Parise and Zajac. Maybe his assistants disconnected the phone.

I don't think coaching is the problem, you have seen the Leafs be more productive with Keefe but have some of the same issues they had with Babcock. Bringing in a more defensive minded old school coach would maybe win more games 2-1, but there's no long-term success in that anymore (Islanders and Stars are living proof) winning games but not going to win the cup playing like that. You need to be able to defend and score equally, an imbalance either way does not help.

The roster is offence driven, that's obvious. The improvement needs to come from within. Matthews has seen lots of defensive improvement this year. The wings need to catchup. The D is better then it has been in the last 5 years, and will get better next year with a trade, improved health and growth from young players. In Dubas' press conference yesterday he said (correctly) that no team in any sport drafts a bunch of players then wins right away. It takes years to learn how to play and to get to the level where you can compete every night. The Leafs need to learn that, and hopefully this season (and the next 2 months) will be their wakeup call.

But it's not that bad. It's not blow it up territory because of two bad months. If the team culture was so bad they were so immature and would never win, why would Muzzin resign? He wants to win. He could have gotten more term and money as a UFA, but he wants to be in Toronto with these players because he sees it. Tavares saw it too. They will get there, and it would be very helpful if every Toronto fan didn't want to blow up the Gardner everytime they lost a game.
