Making It Work Next Season

Description
In this scenario, Ladd, Boychuk and Komarov are still with the organization. While this is obviously far from ideal, the Pageau trade was the biggest trade Lou has made in years. I really have a hard time giving up assets (prospects) that he has invested in to move on from a mistake he didn't make. Idk if that makes any sense, but basically, I think Ladd, Boychuk and Leo are here to stay.

Also please don't trade for Parise....

I don't know if we can move Leddy's whole cap hit, but I think that's priority number 1 this offseason. Unlike Hickey and Ladd, he has value and would probably fit in a more offensive minded system.

10 million on the 4th line and 6 million on the bench and over 4 million in the ahl. Ouch.

I'm just waiting for Lee to continue to decline by about 32 to be the next Ladd.

Also do you really think a guy who has less than half a point per game in the AHL this year will be ready for your second line next year? (Wahlstrom?)

I think Greene is resigned for a year for 1-1.5 mil and plays with Dobson as 3rd pair. I think Leo goes and we maybe send a 3rd or Aho/Vande Sompel to make it happen. I can see Martin getting another year at 800k-1 Mil.

Maybe switch him and Bailey? Idk, if he gets off to a decent start next season, I imagine he gets an early call-up. They gave him a shot this season

Wahlstrom started off with something like 9 points in 12 games, but after he came up for his 9 games (where he led the islanders in xGF%), Barry trotz said he needed to work on his play away from the puck. Thats what he's doing right now, and his numbers are taking a hit. He's ready for the NHL right now from an offensive standpoint. Context matters, if you watched his games with the islanders, he was their best player some nights.

I wouldn't mind any other what you just mentioned, if they could make it work.

you should worry about #91 - I see on twitter half your fanbase is already calling for him to be traded after year 2 @ 11 mill per

The Isles are literally 8-0-1 when Wahlstrom plays smirk

The difference isn't huge imo, but if it saves us some money, I'd be down

That’s true. I still think he gets bought out. It makes too much sense, I don’t think he has a role on this team next season

I'm not concerned about fans being stupid.

But yes almost guaranteed I'll hate that contract ins couple years. Such is the price with high end UFAs.

No rose coloured glasses here. But do you not see the huge problems?

Andrew Ladd and Anders Lee are two different types of players. Lee provides value with his board play in the O zone and he's an elite net front presence. He is top 5 in the NHL in high danger chances at 5 v 5. Lee will eventually decline, but right now he makes the islanders significantly better. The difference between his contract and ladds is that lee's contract is not bonus laden so it is buyout friendly.

I just have a hate on for the vast majority of UFA winger contracts for term. They almost always suck by year 3.

If you think back to those signed over the last half dozen years or so with 5+ years signed as UFA the ones that don't suck by year 3 are limited to Oshie, maybe Foligno in Columbus and the freak of nature that is Brad Marchand.

The terrible ones though are endless (Erricson, Ladd, Okposo, Backes, Lucic, etc etc)

I think its important to choose a direction. If you're going to sign a 29 year old to a 7 year deal where hell provide great value for the first 3-4 years, you better be all in and willing to "go for it" and maximize the win now window. Make trades, don't be stingy with picks and certain prospects (obviously not the blue chips).

There are other players besides those 3 that have somewhat lived up to their contracts like Giroux, Voracek etc.

The problem I have with the long term contracts (like ladd) is the signing bonuses essentially making it buyout proof.

I forgot Voracek. Good one.

Giroux was more of a c who transitioned to winger.

But you raise a good point.

Just in general I find wingers age worse than C's and most winger contracts for term UFAs age badly so I'd be super leery on them.

For your sake hopefully Lee holds up
