VGK keeps teaching cap manipulation

Équipe: 2019-20 Golden Knights de Vegas

Publié: 24 févr. 2020
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
From the Nic Roy AHL shuttle bus to now getting 2 teams to eat 90 percent salary.

I had been told previously 50 percent per player was max, not per team. Looks like that isn’t true.

That’s what I thought too. Maybe it’s an LTIR thing?

Each team involved can only retain a maximum of 50% salary, and a player may only have salary retained twice. We also saw this when Edmonton traded Dubnyk to Nashvile, who then flipped him to Montreal.

Realistically, the maximum a player can have their salary retained by is thus 75%. The trick is paying a team to take on salary for free.

We learned last year that you could retain more than 50% salary on a player when Hagelin was traded from Pittsburgh to LA to Washington. Washington's acquired portion of the contract was less than 50%.

The CBA says that no more than 3 teams can own part of any contract, and no more than 50% can be retained in any single trade. So effectively, max retention is 75% if both trades retain the maximum amount.

Vegas currently is responsible for 28% (3% more than the minimum) of Lehner's AAV. They're only on the hook for an even smaller percentage of that in cash since the contract is pro-rated.

It's not really Vegas that was responsible for this one. It was the Leafs. Brandon Pridham and Laurence Gillman (their 2 assistant GM's) helped write the CBA so they know all the ins and outs of it. Leafs most likely did this because they have to stay as close to the upper limit of the salary cap as possible for the full benefit of all the LTIR they have. When in reality it's only $1.1M in cap space and $190K in actual money for them. Not sure why they didn't get something more than a 5th round pick for that though
