Eller is a great value. Clutch player, too. I'd rather have him at his cap hit, but I still really like Pageau for the Islanders. 24G on a bottom tier team. 20G at 5on5 or SH.

It's much easier to get 24G as a 1st line center on a bad team ... than 24G as a 2nd / 3rd liner on a good team.

In most cases I would agree w/ you. But Pageau got the toughest matchups and didn't have the support of high scoring Wingers to pad his stats. He also produces minimally on the PP. He's been pretty remarkable.

Dear Doctor. You've been absent most of the season. Nice someone has a life besides CapFriendly. Always enjoy your posts.

Pageau is having his best year, yes, but this season is only his second 40-point season in the 8 years he has played in the NHL. $5 million may be a bit much. Hopefully he can prove me wrong

That is a lot of assets and a big gamble of a deal on this player.

$5M, or more importantly, 6% of your cap space always seems like a weird amount. If the player is a bonafide top 6 guy, it's probably a steal, if not, it's an overpay. Centers are a bit of the exception, as I can see merit in having a third line center paid more than a typical bottom six forward, but that's usually accompanied by a team playing a good complimentary winger in their top 6, who is making far less than typical top 6 players, which helps offset the cost.

I like Pageau, but I think he just got paid as if he's a 25 goal scoring center. He likely isn't. This year, he's been force fed insane amounts of minutes, and he's scoring on an absurdly high percentage of his shots. He isn't creating near enough offense to make anyone believe this is just who he is now. Also, I am never a fan of giving a player you expect to play in your bottom six a term longer than 4 years. It's not just about age, but a 6 year term is very inflexible in terms of shaking things up if things don't work out. If Pageau isn't everything the Isles hope he is, that cap hit with that 6 year term becomes an anchor. The problem is, they are essentially paying him as if he is going to play at his ceiling for the next 6 years, and I think that's a tall ask.

This is a good contract, remember this player is 27 years old. I watch a lot of eastern conference hockey and JGP is an underrated talent, he is a great 2 way player who has proved he can score. he can crack some top 6's across the league. Centre is a premium position so 5 isnt alot for a 2 way guy who can score, excited to see what he does in New York.

Paid high end 3C money for a 3C who will be playing into his 30's on the contract who is currently having a career year and looks primed for regression. Gave him a full NTC and a 16 team NTC for 4 years.
This is a HUGE OOF.
Lou having a very bad deadline

So anyone actually watch him play the last few games and think he's NOT worth 5 million?

He plays both ends of the ice and he plays hard but expect his stats to go down playing for the Islanders system.

Clearly, If he's going to be used as a 3rd line C, he won't be getting more minutes. smh. Stating the obvious as if its solid insight. They will use him as a fringe 2C mostly 3C with PK1 duties. He's a defensive horse that can boost any PK. With Trotz system, he's going to fit in well. He's performed very well on a lacklustre Sens team. Give the guy some dues here. He's a solid two way 2 man. Ofcoarse 5 mill for a 3C is a lot. But he's not a 3C on every team. People are stating that he's a 3C on this team and deserves less cash. He can play 2C. Send never used him in the role they used him in this year, hence his stats not standing out until this season. Minutes often equates to production for most players. If you don't get the minutes, you're likely to produce at an average level for those minutes.
