Why not both.

This trade... you'll have to send salary back. Gagner? Manning? Chaisson?

He was supposed to be going to CBJ ... not sure what happened there. Edmonton must have made a last minute offer.

Probably Gagner. Chiasson has an extra year, and Manning is a racist piece of waste. Also sens have moved a lot of forwards

Will it matter when both him and McJesus are busting down the wing for the next year and a half?

Yes. The OIlers need more prospects and I'm NOT a fan of Athanasiou. There's more to playing hockey than "busting down the wing" lol.

I wrote about Athanasiou in general terms earlier this week. He’s a fun buy-low candidate in a bunch of ways, and given that he’s (a) very fast and (b) a year removed from a 30-goal season, he just intuitively feels like a fantastic fit for McDavid.

The problem is that the objective in hockey isn’t to put up individual point (or even goal) totals. It is to outscore the opposition. Athanasiou’s lines have long had a problem with that, and although glomming him to McDavid’s line might fix it (that kind of centre fixes a lot of things), if you’re bringing in a project ideally you’re paying him like a project. Athanasiou carries a $3 million qualifying offer and is just a year away from free agency. There’s every risk of doing the same thing the Oilers just did with Kassian but at a larger scale: paying a guy for what he contributes next to the NHL’s best player rather than for what he would contribute in a vacuum.

The other issue is that McDavid might not fix the problem.

Over the past three years, Athanasiou is 19th in terms of how regularly he generates shots at five-on-five, which is fantastic. He’s 386th in terms of how regularly he generates rebounds, which is awful. His lines generally and his shots specifically just don’t generate second chances, which is bad for all kinds of reasons. Offensively, it badly reduces his effectiveness; typically a 30-goal man creates all kinds of second chances, chances that largely don’t exist with Athanasiou. Defensively, it means shots usually end with a goal or the opposition in possession of the puck, and since most shots don’t score, that’s a lot of opportunity for the other team to charge in the other direction.

Would McDavid cure that? Or would Athanasiou simply encourage McDavid’s own occasional tendency to over-rely on rush plays? The answer is that it could go either way, and that’s not the kind of gamble anyone should want to make if it involves paying a lot of assets to acquire the player and then spending a bunch of money to keep him.

In a perfect world, McDavid’s next left winger would have lots of speed, but it’s more important that he be someone legitimately capable of driving outscoring himself, even when playing away from a superstar.

Didn't say AA was fit or not for the oils, 2x 2nd+ Gagner for AA is a good price to pay and EDM needs players who can play in the top 6 not prospects who will take 3-5 years to develop. At least Oils GM trying to get top 6 players while McDavid is still in his prime.

They could have done better for that price IMO. McDavid doesn't need someone with superspeed, he needs a 2-way guy who can shoot.
