Description
The Bouchard callup isn’t just an emergency callup, the kid is ready to push for a spot, and is already better than Benning. Benning could be worth a sizeable winger for the team or a higher puck according to recent trades, there’s no reason to keep him

Keep Benning, and send Bouchard down he’s eligible for the slide rule. Manning won’t be heading anywhere either, after what he did. I wouldn’t change the defense one bit.

Having depth at D is key in the playoffs. Saying you don't need Benning anymore kinda highlights how little Oilers fans see their team in the playoffs.

I think the oilers still have depth at D even after trading Benning. That’s the whole point, is to keep Bouchard up

The depth is for injuries, Bouchard is a great player and could possibly kill it thrust into playoff action. He could also go down in game 3. Your chances of continuing on the playoffs increase the better your depth is when injuries happen and they do happen because playoff hockey is brutal and amazing hockey.

I doubt Holland moves any defense by the trade deadline, he's more likely to add short-term veteran depth if he can do so cheaply. He's going to want to see how Bear, Jones, and Lagesson hold up in the closing weeks of the season, and hopefully in the playoffs as well. He needs a guy like Benning in order to support those less experienced players, and extra veteran depth is an insurance policy.

This summer is when he'll get serious about changing things up. He has strong prospects who are pushing up against less talented veterans. With Jones looking pretty established now, Holland will push hard to move Russell. Lots of rumors of interest in Larsson, but neither Bear not Bouchard are like to step in and replace him. So Benning would seem to be the odd man out. Failure to move at least one lefty and one righty results in the risks of delaying the development of Bouchard and Samorukov, and losing Lagesson to a waiver claim.

Bear has been on the 1st pair since game 2, Holland doesn't need to wait to see what he has. Nor does he have to worry about Bear replacing Larsson as it has already happened.

Same with jones. Was the best skater yesterday, Holland knows he's got 2 top 4 d men there already for the next 5+ years. Only guy that needs to prove anything is Lagesson and to an extent Bouchard

I'd hold off on calling Jones a top-4. Yes he played some hard minutes and yes it was against the Boston Bruins (top team in the standings), but it was just 1 game and Nurse-Bear faced the perfection line virtually every second they were out. IMO Jones has proved 3rd pairing capability, but top-4 needs more road before we draw any conclusions. Nurse may rue the day he signed another 2-year bridge - he may not have a job in Edmonton when that contract ends.

I'm of the opinion that next season Tippett should continue the evolution of the defense by giving Bouchard sheltered minutes and power play time to begin the season. By the end of the season he should be a solid top 4 option. I think Tippett needs a veteran to ease that transition though. Since Benning has already proven he's not capable of being successful in the top 4, Larsson is a much better option.

With the current cast of defense and noncollegiate prospects, barring a trade of any young players, the future could look something like this.

October 2020:

Klefbom - Larsson
Nurse - Bear
Jones - Bouchard
Lagesson

March 2021:

Klefbom - Bear
Nurse - Bouchard
Jones - Larsson
Lagesson

October 2021:

Klefbom - Bouchard
Nurse- Bear
Samorukov - Jones
Lagesson

March 2022:

Klefbom - Bouchard
Samorukov - Bear
Broberg - Jones
???
