A realistic and disappointing likelihood next season

Description
Dubas doesn't have/won't trade the prospects he needs to land a top-4 D. Muzzin deal hamstrings toronto's salary cap and trading kapanen/johnsson/kerfoot creates too many holes that toronto can't afford to fill via free agency. Dubas ends up keeping the roster virtually intact and leafs continue to be a bubble team with defensive issues and no tenacity

Dubas has literally never had a quiet off-season when in charge in Toronto, even when he wasn't officially the GM.

I wonder if there is a single GM out there that would give TML a 1st for Dermott. Maybe a late late one 28th-31st but from a team that is not even guaranteed to make the playoffs? I highly doubt it.

That's an easy no.

Actually the realistic off-season is that at least one of Johnsson, Kapanen, or Kerfoot is dealt for a d-man. Someone similar to Adam Larsson, Damon Severson, etc. Third line guys are expendable and replaceable by prospects and lower signings. It's the way you cycle talent in..

Absurd comments. Dermott is only 23, has a ton of skill and could be a great buy low pickup. he won’t be very expensive to sign either. You’re telling me that he’s not worth a ~ 20th overall draft pick who won’t crack an nhl lineup for at least two years and has what, a 15% chance of becoming a full-time nhler? Only reason I have the leafs trading him is because the leafs d is way too inexperienced and risk-prone with him sandin and liljegren all in the lineup

I would bet decent money that Dubas has already had 1-for-1 offers for kapanen and johnsson involving the players you just named. My sense is that he’s hoping to land a bigger fish and I just don’t see that happening, especially if muzzin gets the rumored contract.

First of all, where did you come up with this 15% chance stuff? In any other year, that would be a silly claim, and this year's draft is stacked to the rafters - a 20th pick will be more like a 10th pick in a normal draft year. I'm also not sure how you're so certain that the 20th pick automatically won't be useful for a couple years, but let's be honest: WPG ain't contending for a Cup any time too soon anyway.

Yes, Dermott (who was picked 34th overall btw) is a nice, solid 4th or 5th D-man with some room to grow. No doubt. He's also about to be due a raise (it won;t be massive, but still). And yet, you're eager to trade this solid, cheap, young defenseman for someone "who won’t crack an nhl lineup for at least two years and has what, a 15% chance of becoming a full-time nhler?" But how can that be possible? Why would you do such a thing if he's so wonderful?

Oh, right. Because you'd rather have that 20th pick in a fat ass draft. I'd bet WPG agrees with you on that. Soooo maybe suggesting WPG would knock your offer back isn't quite absurd?
