In this case the offer would have to be in a ballpark of such as:


Andreas Johnsson (stands for Schnarr+3rd and also evens out the cap)
Timothy Liljegren (stands for Bahl + upgrade in their package)
Jeremy Bracco (stands for Merkley)
2021 1st round pick


Taylor Hall

Kerfoot and Johnsson which are under contract for a number of years.

Do you think the Coyotes could actually be fielding offers for Hall if they are worried that he walks for nothing as a UFA?

1. The other consideration is it worth holding Hall even if he walks for nothing as a UFA but he helps Coyotes to actually make the playoffs. This is really a Russian Roulette situation.

Yotes knew the risk when they acquired him. His value is still pretty much the same.

Needless to say, ARI is still in the playoff race, and Hall is a key part of the team as they fight for the spot.

They've virtually no reason to move Hall for cheap...

Neither of those guys are worth purposely missing the playoffs this year, which is what they’d be doing if they move Hall

I agree it would cost more than Kerfoot and Johnsson, but it's not about "getting more than they gave up." It's about getting a package/player that they see as having more value than a to-be-UFA in Taylor Hall. They can't change the past. They just need to look at the future.

I am not sure Coyotes are willing to take risk of him walking for nothing but may be they make the playoffs. I would have thought that the Coyotes would be trying to get Hall to committ to a long-term deal like Jake Muzzen before the trade deadline and then announce the new deal of March 1, 2020. If Hall is not willing to committ to a new deal then maybe it is best to move him in a trade. The Coyotes have had an advantage of this window to try to resign him. The Leafs have made a habbit of letting their UFA's walk for nothing in prior years which just seems like poor asset management when you think of the draft picks and players they may have received for Gardner, JVR, Bosak etc.....

Same difference really. I think both of these options are viable for them - either getting a better return or an asset they value higher than Hall as a rental. Ofc in that latter option they have to be absolutely certain that Hall is not re-signing with them.

I think Leafs and Dubas have to let him walk because the team does not have the Capspace to resign him if Muzzen is resigned.

If the Yotes miss the playoffs there's about a zero percent chance Hall re-signs in Arizona. I also believe Chayka will not trade Hall, no matter what. Doing so would prove to be a catastrophic error in trading for Hall in the first place.

No chance Dubas re-signs both Barrie and Muzzin. Here's another question: Does Dubas still have a job this summer if the Leafs miss the playoffs? This is looking more and more likely after ever loss. And things will really look dire after they lose again to the Pens tomorrow night.

Yes. Enough has gone wrong outside of his control that the organization will be convinced it was a fluke. He can point to their decision not to fire Babcock earlier when he wanted to, injuries, flu, and the most consistent goalie the last three years falling off a cliff and he'll have a point. Completely unforeseeable. He then can put up Engvall, Mikheyev, Holl, and Sandin as his triumphs this year, guys he picked, signed, or developed. In short, yes, he has a job. Just a much shorter leash.

No thanks on the Montour trade. He's not THAT good to trade Liljegren for. Not really.

Hall one is tricky to price. Even though he is likely to hit open market, there has been talk of him eventually signing in TOR for years. He lives in GTA, trains there in off-season and counts a number of the Leafs as his friends.

(side note - Hall's value ought to be priced like a knockout option. The binary event would be contract extension vs letting him walk to UFA. Instead of players/picks, I will use "tradepoints" as proxy for this example. Lets say, an extended Hall can return 200 tradepoints, while a rented Hall can return 100 tradepoints. If AZ thinks there is 25% they can resign him, any offer over 125 tradepoints makes sense. And TOR feels like there is 50% they can resign him, they ought to be willing to pay up to 150 tradepoints. Whereas a team like BOS thinks they have 0% chance at resigning, they would offer 100 tradepoints. Weighted-average value based on different probabilities for those making the bid and those making the ask (ARI).)

In short, TOR may have leg up to resign him...thus should be able to outbid any other team, while still not overpaying for him. I'd think one of Johnsson or Kerfoot, Liljergren, b-prospect and conditional pick sounds about right (from TOR perspective).

Countering to that...I don't think BOS would be wise to offer a similar package of Bjork, Vaakanainen, b-prospect and conditional pick since smaller chance of resigning him. (Take Bjork or Vaak out maybe).

Another side note - the only three teams that I imagine would have greater chance of resigning him over ARI would be: 1. TOR, 2. COL, 3. EDM, 4. VAN. I am sure the Coyotes have more accurate list...but these are only places worth discussing trade with him.

Hate that Montour trade. He's getting at least 4m next year....rather keep Liljegren. And really you think Montour and Hall exchanged for Barrie, Liljegren and Kerfoot and. the injured Johnsson really improves the Leafs that much the year? Certainly it hurts the future.

You raise a very good point about whether Dubas's job is on the line. Some one is going to pay for this season if the Leafs miss the playoffs and it might be Dubas as his finger prints are all over this team.

Considering the number of injuries the Leafs have had to their to regulars, the Leafs have done OK this season. If Dubas had his way, Babcock would have been fired years ago. If Dubas had been able to convince Shanahan and the Leafs owners earlier in the year or summer to fire Babcock, the Leafs might be in a comfy playoff spot right how.

Maybe it'll just fall on Babcock and injuries, like palhal says. Matthews and Nylander are having career seasons. Tavares and Marner have been solid. No reason this stacked offense should miss the playoffs. Roster change are obviously coming this summer. They need depth forwards who play defense. That's why Tampsa overpaid for Blake Coleman. You need 2-way players. It can't be all run and gun all the time, haha.

They have done OK. But an inferior team in Columbus has had a lot of injuries and they're pretty much even w/ the Leafs. PIT has been decimated by injuries and they're Pres. Cup contenders. Leafs need defensive forwards.

IMO the Leafs will keep most of there forwards. Maybe Johnsson or Kapanen are traded for cap space.
It's the Dmen. Reilly, Sandin and signed RFA Dermot and Marnicin at LHD. Holl, Liljegren on the right side so they have numbers ( that's six Dmen ) It's how to spend that avaialble cap on. those one or two Dmen with the departure of Muzzin, Barre and Ceci. It just might be a couple of mid pairing Dmen with only couple of years left on their contracts./careers.
