I like the idea of going after a player like Del Zotto, but am not thrilled with the prospect of chasing Kovalchuk. If you can get Athanasiou for that package, I guess it's decent value, maybe... Lately I've been starting to think AA might be highly over rated. After all, he's had a poor season so far, and it doesn't seem as though he's on the target list for any teams. It could be he's connected to Edmonton because the Red Wings have spent so much effort scouting Puljujarvi. Carter would be a nice get, but I doubt Holland parts with that 1st round pick... So maybe L.A. keeps the 2nd? IDK, its late here, and I'm too tired to think.

He's not worth what you think he is. -43 in 45 games, and 20% of his goals were scored tonight. Nope, there won't be many offers for AA & the Org is probably very eager to get rid of him

Nope he's an RFA, well just resign and keep him, we aren't giving him away for nothing. That is the price yzerman set, if we don't get it we keep him and you don't get your speedy winger for mcdumbo

Yes his +/- is bad to the point where it has become laughable. If you start at the 2015-16 season (AA 1st season) and and sum they seasons AA tied for 6th worst with Simmonds. The players that are worse in descending order are Barrie, Hutton, Ekman-Larsson, Severson and Ristolainen. There are some pretty good defensemen there which is probably why no one puts a lot of stock in +/-. The Wings have 12 players in the bottom 24 players in the +/- category players who are very good defensive players so it points to a much bigger issue. Howard has contributed to that by being pulled 5 times so far and hasn't won a game since 10/29/2019 and Bernier hasn't been playing this well all season. Now I'd like to point something out you either want AA or you don't want him. Trading for him and then arguing how bad he is doesn't really work because if he is so bad why do you want him?

Dmen should have the worst +/-, since they play a lot more than forwards. Barrie and Severson are known more for their offense than their defense and play big minutes, I bet they both have been dinged for many SH goals against, while Severson has been on too many awful teams. Ristolainen is big and scores, but he plays too high on the depth chart (he is a good 3rd pair Dman) and has played on many terrible teams. Hutton is surprising, but he might not really be an NHL calibre Dman. OEL is great, but he plays monster minutes vs the best players in the world and he has never been on a good team. Simmonds is surprising, but likely he is a good PP point producer, but struggles at 5v5 vs the better NHL players and of course he is not a great skater, so he might struggle on the back check.

AA probably isn't directly involved in a lot of the goals against, but he is a well-known cherry-picker who probably is out of position often in the defensive zone structure, is probably often very late to get back into his dzone to help anyone and of course weak goaltending is factor.

In looking at it more closely AA has worn the Wings green jacket in 2 of the last 3 years, but early in his career he was nowhere near the worst on the team, but he was likely facing the weakest competition as well, whereas now he goes up against the best.

His poor season and horrific +/- is an indication that he has not been a very good NHL player this season and so his value should not be the same as it was last year when he scored 30 goals. So why is he worth even a 2nd rounder? Doesn't make sense.

McDavid is an elite turd polisher and no one would argue that Patrick Maroon, Zach Kassian, Joakim Nygard or Ty Rattie are better scorers or more skilled than AA. James Neal IS a better scorer, but the Real Deal has no Wheels, so many of his goals this year are from standing around the net and on the PP..

So, let's say establish that a 20 goal/season is worth one 1st round pick. Crunching basic numbers on AA (career goals per game rates and shooting % rates), based on a full season AA is a 23 goal scorer, although last year he hit that number for the first time.

This season both rates put him at almost 18 goals/ season, so to me that puts his value as a second rounder. Given his horrible season, including the abysmal +/- and his injuries, that might put him at a 3rd round valuation.

However his speed, last years' season and still under team control puts his value higher. So to me, his max value would be a roster player with term + a second round pick. I think that is comparable return to what Anaheim got for Kase. Backes is just going to be bought out, although the AA in that deal will probably not see the NHL for another 3 years at th earliest. I would put him as a lower prospect than the Oilers Samorukov who would be Edm's #3 D prospect behind Bouchard and Broberg. Unfortunately for Edmonton they don't really have anything after Samorukov, so it would very foolish to ship him out.

In fact the Oilers prospect cupboards are so barren I don't know how they can afford to give up on any of them. Maybe only Marody, who has had a tough injury riddled season after 2 stellar seasons for the past 2 years.

Anyway, AA likely goes nowhere, but if he does it will be interesting if he can be had for less than a 1st rounder.

So I think I was pretty close, I am honestly not trying to rub it in or anything, I am just interested what you think of the return for AA. Thanks in advance (GR is loaded, so your team will be pretty good very soon).

I think we were both close, I said 2nd and either Rodrigue or samorukov who were both 2nd round picks, so essentially we got 2 2nds and I asked for a prospect who was a second and another second. I see how you were also close on your side, let's just say we were both close for arguments sake.

As for the return yzerman set that price and Edmonton met it, after the deadline yzerman Essentially said that AA is a prima Donna and doesn't listen to people in the locker room to help him grow his game, he also said it would be really hard to sign him in the off-season, if all of that is true then I'm surprised we got what we got for him at all.

I'm ok with it, if you look at yzerman 2nd round picks, he generally crushes it, so give him as many draft picks as you can at this point, I rather have had one of the prospects with a 2nd but I'm ok with trusting him with a full rebuild. Hope this helps with your question.
