Just regarding the Backes deal, i literally would rather have Alzner and Weal then Backes + Alzner 43% retention. Backes wouldn't possibly give the Habs anything more than what Weal would at a fraction of the cost. I like the idea of being creative with Alzner but I don't see a benefit here for the Habs.
Edit: Actually upon second thought it may not be so bad but it would have to be because the Habs are major sellers this year. So that extra cap space next year is really not needed. Deferring future cap space to next year might be worth it actually.

yeah i saw the same opportunity
habs benefit is if we can play Scandella 20 games and get a 2nd in recooped value he gained .
why not Backes at a retained salary at the TDL before he turns UFA ?
he'll certainly get more then Alzner who's taking up space in Laval and we need it with no ECHL team to send players .
i think Thompson , Weal and Cousins have all played well infront of teams scouts the past 2 weeks and they'll be gone .
Kovalchuk i'm not sure on ,he could end up staying the way MTL seems to be approaching things
Kulak might even go for the right price if that's what Scandella got a 3rd for Kulak isnt unreasonable and would help .
but the real angle is all the picks to play with at Draft Day in MTL whether we trade up or just pick bulk in hopes of speeding up a rebuild we're set.
