Description
I think either going for kase or fast makes the most sense now. Going for kreider or palmieri is just not worth the price.

Josh Anderson would be cheaper. Torts has loved Backes in the past, he could be involved again.

I don't think so. ANA would seriously consider that.

backes doen't require a 1st to move him, this is not the same case as marleau.

How so?

If anything the cost to move Backes would be *higher* than cost to move Marleau. Marleau was still useful player.

It won’t, because the two situations are drastically different.
Marleau situation:
Had a NMC
Had a 35+ contract
His team HAD to move him.
Couldn’t be put in the minors.
3.83 million buyout cost.
Full, 6.25 million buyout cap hit.

Backes:
None of those things.

Marleau - refused to play for anyone else but San Jose
Backes - Willing to play for anyone so he can stay in NHL

Toronto - Had to move Marleau to make room for there high price signings
Boston - Doesn't need to make cap space

Marleau situation also had:
* value as a player
* a whole off-season to move him

Backes has:
* 5 day window to deal him
* an extra quarter-season to bury or play him
* an extra year of buyout penalty
* on cap....at minimum, you'd eat 1/4 of this year's salary ($1.5 million), next year's buyout hit ($4 million) and 2021-22 hit ($1 million)...
* Refused to play in AHL
* 15-team no-trade list

Backes + 1st to dump him is a scenario that should make Bruins very happy.

That doen't matter ^, leafs HAD to move him they had no other choice or else they were screwed. BOS is not in the same boat. They dont have a 5 day window, they can trade him in the offseason. Yes he has an extra yr of buyout penalty, but in total it's cheaper than 6 mil. Refusing to play in the ahl doesn't mean anything, he's still buried and BOS is saving money. Can still get a deal done with a 15-team ntc. Not to mention, Backes is only paid 4mil in real money next year which may entice some owners

So how tf will it cost more than a 1st to move backes again if it's actually an easier contract to move than marleau's?????

If they had to move him to SJS, why did they move him to Carolina? lol

The trade deadline is in a few days, genius. Price may drop in the off-season, but we are talking about deadline deals. Can't use July 2020 price and apply to deadline now.

$1.5 million remaining for 2019-20. Assuming a buyout this summer, $4 million for 2020-21. $1 million for 2021-22. $1.5 + 4.0 +1.0 = 6.5.

The Bruins and him agreed that would "not play" until Bruins find a trade. If anything, Bruins have been very accommodating to him. Not sure if same arrangement works elsewhere

BOS is saving money.

Saving money is not paying Backes. Paying Backes to not play is wasting money.

The list of teams with spare cap space is 5-10 teams (mostly lousy teams). His no trade list and that list likely have considerable overlap.

No...the first round pick that comes with him will entice some owners to pay him...not the other way around

im talking about the offseason.......doesn't make sense for BOS to move backes before tdl when they don't NEEd to. They have room.

Bc the deal was CAR would buy him out and SJS would pick him up

They are saving almost 2 mill in cap space rn wdym......

That is true but i can see a scenario where he would rather play in the league and waive his ntc than sit in the pressbox all yr

The Backes deal includes a conditional pick based on this season's outcome. Better think this one through before you dig any deeper.

Sum of the parts.....

Axel + 3rd = Kase
Backes + 1st = 0
$1.5 million retained = 3rd back to them

This deal confirms consensus view on Backes contract (that it costed ~late 1st to move)

no the market price for kase was andersson + 2nd

So the fact that Backes was added and all that was upgraded was a late 2nd to a late 1st means that backes wasn't worth a 1st by itself

obvi BOS needs to pay to move backes, he's a cap dump.....but it's not the same as the marleau cap dump

The cost of of upgrading a 2nd to a 1st is...a 2nd (ie, two 2nds = one 1st)

So if Backes (0%) costed 1st, and Backes (25%) costed a second

And yes, it reaffirmed the market price set by Marleau deal.

nah buddy it would've costed a 2nd to move 0% Backes.......Backes 25% retained is a 3rd

This trade was a 2nd + a 3rd + retention = a 1st

Good try tho
