Coleman Pricetag Sets the Bar

Description
Perhaps it was meant to be a blessing in disguise amidst another terrible Leafs game. The New Jersey-Tampa Bay trade made this evening sets the bar, and the price, for what a under-30 top-9 (perhaps even top-6) 20-goal scoring winger with term left on their deal, should go for.

So, to me, that would mean that there is now a direct comp to what the price should, at minimum, be set for the likes of Kasperi Kapanen, Andreas Johnsson (pending health) and Alexander Kerfoot.

By all accounts, Nolan Foote is graded as an top A-level prospect, so in addition to a 1st round draft pick that the Leafs could, and should, recoup for 2020, the Leafs could add a meaningful prospect to their development system.

Based on the Coleman deal, I have proposed a few deals below for A-level defensive prospects that would surely help the Leafs. Let me know what you like, what you don't like, what should be changed, etc.

Please take note, the deals you see below are for "Kasperi Kapanen" but that could easily be replaced Kerfoot or a health Johnsson.

Man cmon, im a leaf fan and this is ridiculous lol. Coleman is a 25 goal scorer who still makes like 2 mil less than Kap. Tampa desperatley needed him and his term for the upcoming offseason too. Nobody is giving up that much for kappy until he proves to be a consistent 25+ goal scorer

Not that much. Coleman only went for so much because of his cheap cap hit with term. Kap is worth a 1st + a Lower level prospect. If the leafs retain 59% than he’d be worth a hell of a lot more

For Kappanen ? Edmonton says no. ( And respectfully suggests the price is waaaaay to high ) . You do know what Coleman makes ya ?

Coleman’s highest point total was 36 he’s on Pace for 45 points this year. Kap is coming off a 44 point season and on pace for another one? Now Coleman is awesome in all 3 zones but I’d say they are both fairly comparable. Coleman slight edge on cap kap slight edge in age rfa

Nolan Foote was a questionable pick the day he was drafted. Are you confusing him with Cal Foote?

Dream on. You certainly can't considered Tampa first rounder which will probably be in the 27 to 31 range compared those Flyers and Oilers picks even if they make the playoffs.
How to consider Myers who has played 41 NHL games a prospect like Foote?

Its Vancouver's pick but its still lottery protected this year and Vancouver will probably be better next year. So its still highly probable its late this or next year

Foote-largely regarded at the time of the pick as one of the worst first rounders in a weak draft, hasn't done much to improve since
Bouchard-what was he, 8th in a much better draft, had almost fallen, and has already gotten a bit of NHL experience, and has a much higher ceiling (like close to Sandin levels)
Timmins-seems to be extremely highly regarded by Avs fans, I'm not so sure about him tho, he's still good, I'd say similar ceiling at a more valuable position to Foote, but he closer to NHL ready
Harley-considered a good pick in the same draft as Foote, also has developed as expected, some had as many as like 8 d men between the two, and neither have done much to change their stock...
Phil Myers is a weird one, I'd say similar to Timmins, tho idk

Coleman-1.7 p/60 and 1.08 G/60 on probably the worst NHL calibre team in the East, is a very good PKer and was NJD's best defensive forward, and was probably a top 20-30 defensive forward in the game as a whole this year, also makes what, like 1.8 mil, for 1 or two fewer years, and is a few years older, but the age shouldn't make a difference between the 4
Kap-2.12 P/60, 0.83 G/60 on a loaded offensive team... Averageish defensive play iirc, makes more $
Johnsson 2.13 P/60, similar G/60 see Kap for rest
Kerfoot-1.79 P/60, 0.55 G/60, see Kap for rest, but he actually has pretty good defensive play, not nessicarily comparable to Coleman, but certainly not bad

Give Coleman good linemates in TBL he'll easily boost his assist numbers and match if not exceed the TOR guys' scoring rates, not to mention his noticably superior defensive play and good contract, also he plays a "more valuable" position than Kap and Mango.... You def won't get more for any of those guys, especially if you're getting a d spec back, expect it to be a Rassanen type or something, a project

I think the Colorado one would be the most likely/comparable of the bunch. The other trades either have a prospect who's way too good, or they're a team whose draft pick could be too high (conditional or not). Even though Colemans contract added some value for NJ, Kapanen makes 3.2 for the next 3 which is a pretty good deal to me. Plus they would get his RFA rights, as opposed to Coleman who could walk to UFA.

I would also give Coleman a huge + for having a terrible team around him, this year at least, but I definitely agree with this

Nolan Foote was a questionable pick the day he was drafted. Are you confusing him with Cal Foote?

Yeah, all of a sudden he's this elite spec, I don't get it either, he never had this kind of hype in the draft process lol

Coleman has 16 5 v 5 goals this season which ranks 18th NHL ,he’s elite defensively , great pker and on a great contract. Kapanen would get you a 1st and a low end prospect , same with Johnson. Kerfoot probably two 2nds or a late 1st.

Myers will probably pan out as a good #4 D, been pretty decent this year.

That's comparing apples and oranges, though.

The Devils are a selling team still in rebuilding process. Coleman is a 28 yr old UFA-1.
