Dubas is on record saying that they only want to add players under contract/with term.

Lehner does not fit that. Now before you jump all over the Kyle Clifford part of that trade, the main part was getting a backup in Campbell.

nah, this user just loves taking shots at Leafs fans. It's a normal thing..

look at the trade posted. Its a #4 left handed d-man and another goalie for Kapanen and a LTIR guy.. then they'll sit here and say how Kapanen isn't as good as people say he is and that he's overrated (yet Hawks fans always offer on him). Like its a joke offer. Andersen has been Toronto's MVP all season.. but when they see the chance to take a shot at Leafs fans, they jump on it. Its pretty comical if they think that Toronto's need is a goalie.. shows they know nothing about hockey at all LOL

I thought you and I have discussed recently on CapFriendly that there was no way the Leafs will trade Kapanan as he is a big game player and especially after he showed the entire NHL his game breaking skills in scoring the winner against the Coyotes a couple of days ago. I can appreciate that the Hawks would highly value Kapanen but the reality is that they are not willing to give up a similar skilled player around same age.

Leafs have two good goalies and do not need or can afford Lehner.

Didn't say the leafs make it easy on him lol. He gives them a chance to win every night and a 910 sv% and a 2.87 isn't abysmal...

Those who watch Leafs games on a regular basis know that Andersen's stats are not going to tell whether he's a good goalie or not because what the stats don't tell anyone is how often the team gives up 2 on 1's and other high quality scoring chances.

Andersen's stats suffer from such play and so only looking at stats only gives one viewpoint.

If you're including goalies who have also played less than 10 games than yeah he's 40th.
Problem is he was overworked because they had no one else. Now with Campbell he can get more rest and play at a higher level.

TDL Need a better Goalie

What TML needs first is two Ds ( beside Muzzin ) whos upside is quality play in their own zone to prevent 2 on 1 rushes and breakaways and to reduce shooting exercises by other Teams........after that you can put a tin can between the pipes aka Andersen would be back to his 2.50 GAA where he is supposed to be if TML wouldnt treat D part of the Team as an ugly stepchild for last 30 years.

You could at least simulate the trade to kick Andersen out, so the CHI one would make sense.....

But nice bone throwing anyway.....

You sure about that? He wasn't playing good 10 games prior to the injury getting pulled twice in 8 games.

He's 32nd in the league in GAA with .288 and 27th in the league in SV % with .909

Bad defense or not, that's not a top goalie

Kap finally had a breakout game but was long overdue; his on pace for 15 goals wasn't looking so hot prior.

Andersen is 32nd in the league in GAA with .288 and 27th in the league in SV % with .909; not exactly the kind of goalie you want in the playoffs.

Lat 8 games, prior to injury, Andersen was removed from the net twice and should have been 3 times.

32nd in the league in GAA with .288 and 27th in the league in SV % with .909 for the SEASON; GM's don't count on goalies like that to run to the playoffs with.

There are advanced stats available that do exactly that; SV % against high danger chances. I can promise, Andersen this season statistically is not a top 10 goalies regardless of the analysis and playing behind a questionable D while part of the problem, Andersen is as well. With that Leads D in the playoffs, you are going to need a goalie that stands on his head and Andersen is not that type of goalie this season unfortunately for Toronto.

Honestly? If I'm Dubas I'd consider pivoting from Andersen to Lehner. Andersen is up after next year, and the Leafs have no replacement. He'll be 32, and it likely won't make sense to retain him at the price and term he will ask for. And without any option to replace him internally, that would pretty much screw their competitive window.

Lehner is younger and has much better numbers. Adding him extends the window and buys time for Toronto to find that future starter.

He has also not been really that consistent in the playoffs the last two years against the Bruins and especially in Game 7 in both years where he seemed to let in some soft goals. He needs to deliver the goods this year and especially in the playoffs if he wants to stay in Toronto for the long-term.

Thank you for the non bias response. I get that in prior years andersen at times has look nothing short of excellent, minus the playoffs, but this year is a big red flag for leafs nation. He has had some standout games but overall is not looking great...very average. Anyone knowing anything about hockey knows in the playoffs you don't win cups without a excellent goalie; Lehner is a clear upgrade at the most important position in playoff hockey.

Again, a small sample size versus his overall body of work. This year hasn’t been great for Andersen but I still wouldn’t move Kapanen for one year of Lehner and another LD.

But hey, you're used to first round exits; personally I'd rather my team has a lottery pick then a 1st round exit...about the worst spot to be in.

It's not a small sample size when you are trying to win in the playoffs and your goalie has been off the last few months. Goalie is hands down the most important position in the playoffs and Lehner is without question an upgrade and a goalie that has shown he can carry a bad defensive team.

I would rather see my team in the playoffs. The idea that Freddie is a bad goalie is ridiculous. He certainly hasn’t been his consistent self lately but he will come around.

This season he's been average (notice nobody said "bad"); average goaltending equals first round exits...goaltending is everything in the playoffs as most hockey fanatics know.

And no, any hockey fan who would rather see their team in a first round exit versus getting a lottery pick means they are immune to it by now...not surprised
