Value is relative. Other teams have leverage on Toronto in any deal involving Johnsson or Kapanen because they play 3rd line minutes and likely wont get much more than that before their current contracts expire, in which both of them would probably require a raise. Their value is greater as a trade asset for acquiring a top 4 defensemen than as a player, which is likely the dilemma and why a deal around them would be so complicated. So what Im saying is while their value is not that of a 3rd liner, it isnt that of a top line forward either, even if theyd be doing better than most other forwards on the team because thats not how he is playing in toronto, because he is (probably) getting sheltered minutes while the Matthews and Tavares lines get the tough match ups
