Ryan Ellis is worth waaaayyy more than Nylander + Bracco. Leafs would probably have to throw in more chips.

Nylander is not a loss for a team that will consistently score goals without him. He's the 4th best forward.

he's also their best transition forward and recently their most lethal power play option, but sure. And even if he was their 10th best forward, that wouldnt be enough value coming back for him so it's a significant loss in the trade.

You need to worry about defence, not scoring. The scoring is there in bunches. At some point you have to move one of those 4 contracts even without a big trade for a d-man (you need to re-sign Hyman, Sandin and Andersen/another goalie eventually), and it won't be Marner, Matthews or Tavares. Moving out 2 of Kerfoot/Kapanen/Johnsson instead sounds like a depth killer. Oh and if Mikheyev continues to produce he'll want money too.

you dont trade good players for a loss in a trade to fill needs. You just dont. That's how you ruin teams. I'm all for trading anyone if it makes the team better, but this trade does not make the team better, and i say this as someone who really likes Ryan Ellis. But he's going to be 30 next year, and his contract goes on for 7 more seasons after this. Oh and he's currently on the IR with an upper body injury and has been since the new year.

This is an off-season move but okay make it any RHD that you like in that move. It very clearly improves your defence (which is the problem) and doesn't take much away from the potent offense at all. Take draft picks back too if you feel it's unfair but at some point you need to make a move, that's all I'm saying.

Zadorov only makes sense if you end up dealing Dermott, so logically it's fine.

But that deal for Nashville doesn't make a lot of sense of them. Outside of Fabbro who will be in his second season, their depth on RD isn't fantastic.

The Vatanen contract is pretty bad too.

I was thinking Nashville could move him because of the expansion draft. They need to protect three of Josi, Ekholm, Fabbro, Ellis. Can't do the 4-4-1 thing again because they'll want to protect Duchene, Arvidsson, Jarnkrok, Watson, Forsberg and Johansen up front I'd think. Plus potential UFA signings and re-signings.

and if the right top pairing RHD and picks or whatever becomes available and the Leafs make that trade? sure, but the one you proposed is not good, and that's what is being discussed. Also, the leafs would be foolish to not try and fix the defensive depth with their forward depth first. You hang on to top line scoring forwards as long as you can.

Zadorov also isnt very good, he's big and he's mean so people think he's good at defence and he's not. He's just a taller, younger and slower Roman Polak, but not as good some how.

Watson and Jarnkrok will likely get exposed. Personally I'd rather keep their four defensive guys over most of their forwards but I could be wrong in a years time. Regardless I don't see them dealing Ellis this offseason.

In a vacuum they are equal. Due to age I would give a huge edge to nylander.
