Description
Trying to keep this as realistic as possible. Doesn't seem like the market for pure rentals is going to be very good. So altho I wish Pageau could return more, I don't believe he will. This is of course all based on Pageau and DeMelo not being resigned by the team. There are also rumours of Hainsey resigning as well, so throw that deal out the window as well, if he does.

One thing is for sure, OTT has alot of potential UFA's that they culd get later round picks for, but imo they'll have to juggle the value of a late round pick and the value of keeping their younger prospects marinating in the AHL very carefully.

Trade too many veterans and you weaken a very strong AHL club. Trade too few and you'll start losing guys in the summer for nothing, if they don't resign.

Discussion welcome! Let me know what you think.

If you are going to retain half on Anderson, i can tell you already their are 3-5 teams that will give you more than a 6th for him

I think OTT basically has to retain salary in the majority of their deals, or they won't be above the cap floor. It can be a huge weapon. I'm not sure how valued Anderson is anymore around the league. He's been very good in the playoffs when he makes it, but has been inconsistent again this yr and with his numbers this year, I'd be very hesitant to give up too large of an asset.

You might have been a little modest in some of those returns. If Ottawa retains they should get some mid levels picks or better as you suggest. But even at that if the Sens got two NHLers from those picks it would be a bonanza. Would be nice to see a those veterans who may in their last year get a shot at a Cup.

DeMelo's value is hard to say. He's only at 900k and hes been pretty solid, but hes also a rental and hed command a big pay raise so it would be a little unreasonable for a team to resign him. You could also definitely get more in that NYI deal. Ho-Sang is 24 and hasn't played a game in the NHL this season. I think for Pageau and Ennis you could definitely get Ho Sang and a 1st

NYI deal is realy bad for OTT, Ho Sang is a bust and a 2nd is not enough for Pageau.

Ya like I say my heart says they're worth more, but when the media that's trying to sell a full day deadline show, is admitting the market for rentals will be way down, I have to believe the market will be lower than the norm...haha. Too many GM's doing their research now and realizing that big priced rentals at the deadline don't necessarily get you any closer to a cup. For me, if guys like Pageau and Demelo are unsigned by the deadline getting something is better than losing them for nothing in the summer.

Well done, this is very realistic. You certainly won't be disappointed come Feb 24th!

But here's another idea: instead of retaining salary and getting picks back, you could trade your pending UFA for a player with a little term left. For instance, Namestnikov to Edmonton for Jujhar Khaira. Khaira is better than a 4th round pick, and cheaper (this year) than retaining $1.6M on Namestnikov. Edmonton does it because they're near the max for contracts and it free's up $1.2M on next year's cap, giving them more flexibility next summer.

You're right. And OTT has used this type of strategy in the past, because of Melnyk's issues with "cost certainty"...

If a few "NHL" players come back in return, it also helps keep our youth marinating in the AHL. I like it! Cheers!

I hope too that they can get more, but without a contract in place for Pageau, I think teams will be very chincey...

Ho Sang may be a similar reclamation project to DuClair last yr, but you're probably right, his off ice attitude screams BUST...

Teams will be hesitant on Pageau because even though the market for centers is thin, these GMs know what he is doing this year is unsustainable. He’s seeing more ice time than he ever has in his career and he is shooting at a career high 17%. and is playing more minutes than he ever has in his career on a terrible Ottawa team. He’s an ideal third line center for most teams in contention, but I think it will be tougher to get a first for him than people think

bubble teams will be hesitant, contenders will not they WANT a rental that is playing career year, increases the odds of them winning
