Don't get me wrong, good for him. But he's not an NHL player and the AHL is really for player development. No need for guys in their 30s.

Sure but you also need some veterans to help those young guys and lead them

I mean, he’s still in the NHL lineup and will continue to be. Probably means he’s an NHL player. He’s also the captain of the AHL team, no need to hate on a deal like this

He's played well in the NHL recently and there's no risk to it. If he doesn't play well then you can send him down in AHL. An AHL team can have a few veterans for leadership purposes.

I think you forget there are plenty of long and horrible contracts that will be AHL buried. This year is headlined by Backes making $6 million to not even play. There will be a more expensive AHLer next year.

It’s obvious that the kids in Cleveland look up to him (even though they’re looking down, but details details). He’s helped to transition multiple players to the NHL this season all the while bouncing between the AHL and NHL lineup. He gets a cool $1M guaranteed on a 2-way contract making a smidgen above NHL minumum when in Columbus. Great deal for all involved and a commitment to player development and their AHL affiliate in Cleveland.

I don’t know who pooped in your Corn Flakes, but really? Don’t get me wrong, good on you for speaking your mind. But comments are for people who think before they post, and not really for creative development. No need for cranky guys in their 30’s.

Sorry for the cheeky post, pharrow. I read your original post as trolling it seemed so over the top given the size of the contract. In truth, I honestly don’t understand how you find it surprising that the vast majority of folks think it’s “Yes” deal. You are out on your own in this regard.

If you think I don’t have anything to say, read my post in this article and every other post I made - then cast judgment sir.

The bluejackets don't need a 5'5 32 year old guy neither do the monsters.
That's a roster spot that can go to an NCAA kid, or an undrafted FA who has earned a chance.
This is hands down a waste of a roster spot. Leadership my butt. He's never going to be the guy to stick up for a younger team mate. He's never going to battle in the boards etc...
It's a wasted signing.

You uh... realize that there is more to being a team leader than playing like a grinder?

I don't think you understand why they keep the vets on the team.
It's so their younger guys don't get run and abused.
The coaching staff doesn't need help coaching them.

I'm sorry the Blue Jackets didn't sign Hunk Badunga to knock some 21 year olds over.

It’s apparent that Jarmo Kekalainen (CBJ GM) feels that at least part of their recent success (they’ve literally been the best team in hockey the past 6 weeks weeks) has been partly attributable to Gerbe’s work both on and off the ice. I am cognizant of the downsides to such a contract, and I am certain JK is as well, in terms of the 50-contract limit.

The reality is that Gerbe would have been at least able to get a 2-way NHL contract next season, maybe not for 2 years but I’m sure the 2nd year made it a quick decision for Gerbe and his representation, who may have been tempted to wait until July 1 and see if they can land a 1-way contract for 2020/21 rather than take a 1y/2-way deal. Multi-year contracts for fringe NHL’ers (even useful ones like Gerbe) approaching their Mid-30’s are quite rare - I can’t think of any of the top of my head. So you’re right in being cautious, because in this respect it’s a bit of an unusual contract.

However stepping back and examining the success over the past several weeks - which has been largely driven by players who played alongside Gerbe in Cleveland - JK and company felt it was worth tying up a contract slot for 2 years. He must have played a key role in player development in order for this deal to have gone down. And most poll respondents tend to agree.

say what you will but most prospects come in needing to gain strength. That's one of the biggest thing that holds them back. And people do get run in the AHL. It's guys trying to show they can be that 4th line push back guy to make the 750k league min. That's a big pay day for them.

By AHL salary, I meant for all two-way contracts and players who are signed to AHL clubs only, hence using "AHL salary," of course there will be players on one-way deals making more

Seems there is some serious conversation regarding this contract that is based in a lot of areas that does not happen here too often. I can see both sides of this but I must interject.

In no way is Nathan a all star. Nathan is a very good player in the right situation, be it in the NHL or AHL. Nathan has a unique place in either league given his stature and that can not go under appreciated. He has defeated all odds to make it to where he is and that given that he is a career 28 point player at the NHL level over and 82 game sample size (146 points in 413 games) proves he is no slouch.

A player like this is an inspiration not only to the fans but to people in the organization. At the NHL level this year he actually has a registered hit for every 12 minutes of play. There are only five players on the team that are higher than him on CBJ. Nathan is the epitome of a player beating all odds similar to Muggsy Bogues was in the NBA.

There is not cap implication. There is no drawback. Columbus is in no need to free up spots for up and coming prospects. There is not reason to object to this contract considering everything this player has to offer, not only in terms of production but in his experiences.
