Description

The Blackhawks have a pretty well documented history of bringing up good young players, only to have all their high priced veteran contracts get in the way and then they miss out... with Strome, Kubalik, and Gustafsson coming off the books this season - AND no goaltenders signed - what do you do? I see plenty of Armchair GMs keeping players like Seabrook on LTIR for next season... but given how unlikely that is, let's have a real look. Here's an attempt to keep all the young studs at the expense of hoping for a CBJ-type situation in net... I suppose you can sub in the back up for anyone else they may or may not have in their system, or whatever goalie you can sign for roughly 1mil.

Can someone remind me again why Stan Bowman just had to get Maatta, DeHaan, and Shaw this past offseason...? Because this would look so much nicer without that trio...

As an aside, buying out Seabrook has no short-term help, His cap hit the next couple years is roughly the same as it currently is (6.6mil 2020, 3.6mil 2021, 6.6mil 2022, 5mil 2023). I see no way you can trade this contract to anybody... anyone currently rebuilding will hope to be out of it before that contract is over. It's pretty helpless

Seabrook is having shoulder and double hip surgery. Shaw is on his, what, 5th concussion? And De Haan is having his 4th shoulder surgery. I wouldn't call it "unlikely" that any of these guys call it a career, those are life changing injuries and operations. Also, the Hawks are absolutely, 1000%, not going into the season without a real starting goalie.

I agree, it's a starting goalie or all three of these players... and I low-balled all three of those contracts

Hey, if I had any of those surgeries I'd sure as heck retire... but these guys just keep going. Seabrook was just saying how many months ago he can still play. I'm not saying it's completely impossible, but nobody knows that as fact. Why not have at least someone try to build a team without everyone retiring?

I agree that it's unlikely Seabrook is done, but I don't think this is how things go down. I think Maatta is probably traded, especially if De Haan can play. Saad may be as well, especially if they miss the playoffs. I think Crawford will take a 1-2 year deal at about $3 million. Smith has had a nice year too, I think he could be moved for a mid-late pick, with some retention if necessary. If there really is no interest, his buyout cost isn't that bad.

Not to mention Gus is gone, they aren't re-signing him next year. You easily have $11M between trading Smith, one of either Maatta or De Haan, and not signing Gus.

Boqvist and Mitchell both are moving in the place of two defenders you have on the roster here each at $4M+ (Gus + DeHaan or Maatta). Smith is as good as gone.

Plenty to bring in Lehner, plus sign Strome and Kubalik each at $1M more which is what it will take.
