Marleau= 1 year, $6.25M= 1st rounder

Your logic:

Backes= 2 years, $6M Cap hit, can’t even play= less than a first.

Not my logic, pretty much everything thats been exaplined. Good try though

"It could be as simple as losing a draft pick, most likely a first round one"
More importantly, the 6 million is only for next year (because of cap rules they only take on the end of this years deal so like 2 million or something), so like Marleau it is only one year. Plus he isnt that bad that he wont make a team (like Nathan Horton or Geoffry Lupil) he just doesnt have a spot on the bruins roster due to their depth.

Marleau = full NMC
Marleau = 35+ contract
Marleau = legit had to be traded to be cap complaint
Marleau = 4.25 million buyout cost.
Backes = none of those things.
Backes = 3 million buyout cost.

Not as similar as one would think.

Leafs had to move that 1st, as they wouldn't of been cap compliant without moving a big contract, every team and GM knew that and had leverage on them to acquire that 1st. Bruins don't have that leverage against them, so they don't have to move a 1st, as they are currently cap compliant. Thus, moving Backes won't require a 1st.

Kings are going to want a 2020 2nd for Toffoli. Prospect is negotiable, but I don't think JFK gets it done.

As a Kings fan, my ideal target would be Lauko since he's expansion draft exempt, but I could see them accepting Senyshyn. Zboril is less likely, as the LHD is not a position of need for LA and would require protection in the expansion draft.

Both good points! Bruins probably dont wanna give up their first two picks in this draft, but there could be ways around this!!!
In all fairness, Kuhlman is the player going your way, and he is a young good RW with good top 6 potential. the 2nd and JFK were just to make is more even

Not sure why the Kings would want a 24 year old forward when they're rebuilding. The majority of their promising assets that will fuel the rebuild are 18-20. The Kings aren't going to want a guy that will be pushing 30 when the Kings are ready to compete again. If Kuhlman is the player that Boston is willing to give up for Toffoli, then I think the Kings move Toffoli elsewhere.

Thats fair!!! He is definitely an older "young player" so that makes sense, but a lot of these US college players come into the league later (once they graduate) and then they excel!!!
In all fairness the kings also get JFK who is a good young prospect and a 2nd rounder. (some have been telling me its an overpayment)

With Boston's 2nd round pick expected to be in the 58-61st overall range, they're likely going to have to do better on the prospect front than a team like Calgary or Carolina who's 2nd will be 10 spots higher. JFK is a very high risk prospect that could work out, but is far more likely to be a bust. He hasn't exactly been tearing up the Swedish league this year. If he was expansion draft exempt, the Kings might be willing to take the risk on him, but he's not so they won't. At 23, he's not exactly young either.

Kings want a 2nd and B prospect for Toffoli. In Boston's case, they'll want a B+ for reasons explained above, but will be willing to consider guys that are expansion draft exempt. Lauko is the guy that fits all of those descriptions, so in my mind, that's the guy the Kings target.

Carolina deliberately took a 6 million reduction in their cap on Marleau. Even if Backes gets bought out the terms won't be as severe.

It’s not like 24 is over the hill. He’s a college player that signed as a free agent and has looked damn good in the time he’s gotten in the NHL. Gotta think he has 5-6 years before hitting a decline. Rebuilding teams should be all over cheap talent like that, especially given that there is ample cases of undersized forwards that were undrafted, and finally get a chance at significant ice time at the NHL level and became high end players. If I’m a rebuilding teams looking for players to give a chance to at the NHL level (you probably don’t want to do that with 18-20 year olds as it could break them), Kuhlman is the kinda guy I’m targeting.

Sure, if the Kings could bring in Kuhlman in exchange for Forbort or something, I'm sure they'd consider it. However, Kuhlman isn't going to be the prize of the return in exchange for the 2nd best rental on the market this deadline.
