Looking Back On The Phil Kessel Trade

Description
The off-season Phil Kessel trade was addition by subtraction because Phil’s laziness and attitude was killing the team. He didnt have the intensity to play for Sullivan and needed a fresh start. Even though the return the team got in Alex Galchenyuk didn’t work out, they are still a better team. That said, I do think Jim Rutherford could’ve got something more for a top player like Phil Kessel. What’d you guys think?

Are you saying they could have gotten Hayton? Because no way were they going to get him. Don't know if PIT could have gotten anymore for him because his NTC.

I do think Hayton’s value was too high but maybe they could’ve gone after someone like Garland instead.

They def could have gotten "more" (by now I mean a competent NHLer and not bad spec, who had way higher value then compared to now) but no where close to Hayton

Isn't Galchenyuk just as lazy as Phil? I've heard that but I don't know.

Exactly. His NTC hurt his value. We were boxed in a corner. I would’ve loved a patcioretty return but that clearly didn’t happen

It was Kessels NTC that limited the return, but hey he helped to hoist 2 cups, was a fantastic playoff performer so not a loss at all

Penguins fans loved Kessel but the media hated him so they ran him out of town.

Hinostroza and POJ or a lesser prospect would have been great.

I mean, is it really worth dwelling on? Pens basically got Kessel for a song, solidified two stanley cups as a result of him and essentially got rid of his contract wiht barely aking any cap back long term. (Not too mention that it looks like Kessel is taking a step back this year to boot)

Gms would kill for this level of amazingness in a 4 year span. I think you can survive without fleecing Arizona on this one.

I think the penguins are happy to be out of that contract.
They got 2 cups and dished off the last years of that deal while he was clearly declining.
I will say one thing though. Their power play really misses Kessel. You can say what ever you will. If they could have kept Phil as a 4th liner on a low contract to just do the PP, it would have been great. But it is what it is.

Yeah Galchenyuk doesn’t back check, he isn’t aggressive away from the puck and he offers no physicality.

Well, just because the fans love him doesn’t mean that they acknowledge he didn’t fit the team.

Yeah I’m sure there are no regrets about bringing Kessel to the team. He gave the organization exactly what they were looking for. It doesn’t get much better than that.
